Random Rant: I feel like reddit died after they banned all the “unmoderated” communities. All the posts became sanitized. Now reddit is adding AI and streaks and NFTs to keep people on a platform that has no more content.

I’ll admit the streaks kept me hooked to at least checking in daily. Then I got a permaban so I couldn’t do streaks anymore so I stopped using the site.
Always did not like Reddit… As an ex newgen reddit user reddit banned me for literally no reason… Did not receive any reason, just some strange invisible ban (I could log in to account, do anything and etc and it would say Server Error)… Also this karma sh**…
I had an alt account, I accidentally upvoted my main account’s post and got shadow banned. I didn’t realize for 3 months when I was like “why the fuck does no-one reply to my comments and does not even downvote let alone upvote my posts”. But that was like 4 years ago.

The auto-moderation is terrible and bans you for the dumbest stuff. Reddit has continually gone downhill the last couple years. Ad’s are out of control, and they love to promote religious ads and that should be illegal.

92 people control about 500+subs on reddit, you can guess which one they are, and the ones less likely to get banned.
I wrote a very fiery letter that I’m sure a bot deleted about how it cheapened the phrase “violence” to have it be slung casually around at speech their shareholders don’t love.

reddit has been coming down hard on vpn users since last year. its futile one they shadowban you, rarely i see peoples ban get lifted on the shadowban sub, apparently and pretty obvious, The user said reddit “made a mistake because thier filters were misconstruing your words for somethng offensive”, i doubt reddit admins have time to look at every appeal, thats why i believe they ignore most of them, if not all accounts that are part of the multiple accounts from a single users.
I was banned for saying something to the effect of “Fuck all the Republicans” in response to someone hating on a specific one.
My theory is they are removing all the anti-maga and replacing us with neutral/pro maga bots so it appears that there aren’t so many people against them.
It’s sad to see sites like Reddit and Imgur dying. They used to bring me so much joy.
At least Fark is still holding steady, although photoshop contests just aren’t as fun as they used to be.

If an app can scrape phone info without prompting for extra permissions, you can bet the app dev is scraping that data and storing it alongside session data for security purposes.
Web browsers are much more sandboxed. Still plenty of ways to fingerprint thoGenuinely curious about that. I can’t find any literature or blog posts about that unfortunately.

I just got an automatic 3 day ban (presumably because my comment contained the word “murder”) so I said “fuck it”, deleted my comments and posts, and deleted my account
After being there for 12 years, I was banned for no reason I know of. Appealed it a bunch of times and finally gave up. Done with reddit. Maybe I’ll grab content from there for here.
Same, also 12 years in and no history of problems. Quoted someone calling a female user a “bitch” so they couldn’t edit and reported them, I got flagged and banned from the large subreddit for “using a slur.” I appealed and had the pleasure of talking to a
modgrade-schooler with temper problems so the appeal was denied and as a result, somehow… for reasons that are still unclear, my entire account was then banned. Admins did not care. I made a new account and was shadowbanned immediately.I could go through the hoops and change my IP and all that fun stuff if I really want to participate on reddit.

even if they lifted a ban, people have reported being re-shadowbanned almost quickly anyways, because they dont clean out thier filters, after someone ban has been lifted. you only need to look at reddit wrong to get banned. new users, old accounts are not safe.
only the determined people will ban evade, have new IP address, new device, and other methods of ban evasions. those that make hundreds if not thousands of accounts to earn money from.
Yah I went through all that, you have to really clean your browser before and after resetting your IP, and if you use anything connected to your old account you will be immediately shadowbanned, as well as if you use a VPN to sign up, or even to log in.
I eventually gave up, it’s too much work to interact with bots and brainless people.
browser canvas size, fingerprinting, they look at your screen resolution, your browser size, the current version, if your browser is minimized,etc. there are ways to hide that, but you probably have to go to a different forums how to do it.
I heard about that from my darkweb days. It’s amazing how much of a fingerprint everyone leaves. I decided that if I have to fire up TOR and encryption to talk to redditors who are often bots anyway, it’s probably a dead platform

Lemmy has more personal interaction but it’s still a deeply niche culture made up largely of younger white males who really, really like linux and while I align with leftists, it gets tiring seeing leftists and tankies bickering with each other rather than real debates between people with actual divergent ideology. While reddit also has it’s own demographic problems, there are places where you can get a broader range of ideas and diversity.
Can I just say, without invalidating your underlying concerns, that this place truly gets better when you start blocking communities and individuals, and doing so knee-jerk if necessary with no thought or remorse.
The tip of the identity iceberg doesn’t need to come into play, really. I’ve learned that in this world there are contributors and detractors. There are those who add, and those who take. There are good faith contributors, and there are misanthropes who aren’t happy until everybody else isn’t happy.

Would I want a friend IRL that just says whatever’s convenient at any time, regardless of how germane, factual, useful, or genuine? Or would I avoid them IRL because they’re a nightmare? That internal reflection guides a lot of my block decisions. Also why I find it so easy.
To summarize my novella, I think this is how I made my Lemmy experience more sane, because it was borderline intolerable at first. To the plus, it only took about 20 or 30 blocks to realize that almost all of the toxicity arose from a small batch of select kooks.
I fully appreciate the advice, and I have been hammering the block button, but every time I do a small part of my faith in humanity chips away like a crumbling old statue the represented a forgotten empire.
I am sad that so many people are unthinking, unfeeling, or deeply unserious where it matters. But here we are, forced to prune and further the atomization of our failed world because there is no alternative. There’s no arguing nor reasoning with people who interact with others only to address their inner feelings and not with care or consideration that we share an objective reality we have to agree on.
With AI and immersive experiences, this is all going to get even worse.

I just wish Lemmy had the same subreddit communities on it, the real benefit of Reddit was that you can add it to your search in Google for niche things and it would find threads about that thing, Lemmy on the other hand has either not been indexed as much or just doesn’t have those communities and the organic discussion among them. I think one of the issues with Lemmy is there is some friction to joining it, you need to figure out what an instance is and which one you wanna join and then figure out an app to access Lemmy and then find the communities that interest you etc. Compare that with something like BlueSky for Twitter replacement, it’s easy to sign up and follow peoplw and they gave a official app
It’s a smaller site, as evident that your subscriptions and even the default homepage barely crawls by and there’s often days with almost no new content.
Lemmy is not going to be the future of shared internet space, but it’s a good Purgatory for the exiled before we all decide to start doing things outside.

It’s feeling very strongly like their ideal platform has millions of shadowbanned users, or more correctly, millions of users in their own instanced versions of reddit, populated entirely by AI creating the impression of community, influencing and shaping the attitudes, behavior, political beliefs and shopping habits of entire nations.
The massive influx of bots pretending to be humans doesn’t really bode well for the future of social media.

Im pretty sure I am on a Canadian based instance… which is fine by me. But I tried a couple that where branded as general, good for new users, and just never got a confirmation for my account, could never log in. I tried this one, cause the name implied it would work. And it did!
But yea I miss the large communities for a specific video game, and the various large mtg communities. And yea, for tech support I do still add reddit to my search queries.
Yes I ran into the same issue where you sign up to an instance and then it says that the admins will verify your account for approval and then I can’t log in for a while and forgot which instances I even signed up for, that alone probably caused a bunch of potential lemmings to not join I think. I still go to reddit for discussions about random TV show episodes discussions and other niche communities, there’s sadly no other equivalent easy to search forum that I know of for these things, hopping Lemmy becomes as huge as reddit in the future for this purpose

Yeah I agree. I feel like I’m still figuring it out and missing things. I switched to BlueSky and feel like that was almost intuitive. That’s one of the big issues with moving away from reddit for a lot of users.

I gave up on reddit the day the mod teams of were allowed to ban you from their community not because you did anything wrong, but because you were a member in another sub that they didn’t like.
That was so long ago, it’s just how people in contentious communities dealt with people to save work on mods.
I know because I was involved in those apps and moderating large subs that absolute shitmouthed turds loved to ransack with brigading.
You have no idea how bad brigading was, particularly by the foul, juvenile 4chan-type crowds who would arbitrarily decide something was “pro feminist” and then flood the sub with hate posts until the mods gave up and then they would slip in their own mods and rebrand the whole community.
I genuinely did not care and still do not care if it offended some people that they were pre-banned because they liked to participate in hate communities, for whatever reason. Back then you could make alts and nobody cared so what does it matter.

This is what really shocked me about reddit, was how it’s this really huge entity whose owners just somehow didn’t notice that the front page being shown to everyone by default contained stuff from subs that were really very blatantly and obviously manipulated by mods not being on the level. I realize you can’t police every one of the thousands of active subs on there, but what gets to go to the front page shouldn’t need much curation.
Yeah. The mod infiltration by bad actors really sucked. What was it like 50 people that were basically modding entire site? Then you have unmodded communities that get banned and you can’t create a new one because the other one was banned. It’s like the catch-22 they use to keep communities in check.

The thing is, when those horrible posts got boosted to the front, it just made for more drama, more “engagement” and more links being shared across other social media sites.
Reddit ignoring their responsibility to administrate wasn’t a bug, it was a feature.
It’s the same as what Jubilee is doing now, boosting the worst voices on both sides, making people hate each other more and giving people a distorted view of demographics in our country. It’s line going up at the expense of everything we’ve worked the last several thousand years to build. I’m happy I was banned and will never return, I just wish more people would realize what these places are doing to us all.

I shouldn’t have to justify myself when I didn’t break a communities rules and a community shouldn’t have the right to police my content consumption when it doesn’t impact that community.
There are a lot bigger things that we had to deal with daily, and there are lot bigger problems with the platforms, communities, and broader social impacts that remained on my mind than the small percentage of people inconvenienced by the decisions some people made to keep their mod teams from being overworked. You’re not the only one butthurt by the bot, but the alternative was worse so I still don’t really care.

I’ve been banned from plenty of communities already - particularly meme communities - in the wider Fediverse for rubbing a mod the wrong way. It isn’t particular to .ml and it’s silly to see Lemmyites panic every time they see an .ml instance user or post.
