I genuinely don’t even know who that demonstration was for other than 12-year-olds. None of these cars have any practical or road applications. Where are you going to need to flip your cap off of a ramp or over some cars? It’s so fucking stupid.

It looked more like a choreographed car dance routine than anything else; given how fast and precise those thrusters need to be, how does a human even control it?

Supercars are some of the most impractal things on the planet, yet people buy them all the time.

A supercar that can briefly fly? If that actually makes it to production, people will absolutely buy one.

      Very stupid investors?

EV sales are flat or shrinking in the US (but growing extremely quickly outside the US, partially thanks to the Hormuz situation). Tesla’s sales are flat. He’s doing anything possible to show that Tesla has a future.

So, he basically told his talented engineers to take the stabilizing parts of a SpaceX rocket, put them in the body of a car, and pretended that what was demoed is actually vaguely related to something people might be able to buy at some point.

There isn’t a chance that a vehicle with those kinds of thrusters would ever be road legal. You’re basically driving a pretty large bomb around. You crash that vehicle and you don’t just kill yourself, you kill everybody within a pretty large blast radius.

People really weren’t buying those though. It’s a hot take, but I think they made the right choice on that one. They followed it up with the wrong choice to not develop hybrid wagons/cross overs. I don’t think anyone saw the return of the minivan.

People stopped buying sedans because the car industry made a concerted effort to demarket them. They’ve been pushing SUVs for nearly 30 years, trying really hard to get people to stop buying sedans and were too successful. Now there’s a fuel crisis and no sedans in production (from American brands at least) so the manufacturers are getting caught with their pants down again

I do wonder if the fleet market is sufficient to keep both sedans and vans in production, since each makes a very competent fleet vehicle platform for different usecases, see the venerable Crown Victoria for example

I’m not sure. I think they were reacting to buyers, not the other way around. I remember the late 90s and early 2000s. SUVs and crossovers were relatively new and exploding in popularity. Partly as a back lash against the “soccer mom” minivan stereotype. I never liked them, but I also never liked sedans. I’m definitely a wagon guy. It’s sad that they all became crossovers.

Even if they don’t replace a car, they’re great vehicles. They’re fun to ride, you rarely have to worry about traffic jams, they’re cheap to operate, and you can do a lot of your own maintenance.

Does yours have seats on the back? A trailer? I’ve seen a variety of solutions for transporting kids. The trailer is the solution I see most often, and it looks like the most luxurious option for the kids. They often look like they’re some aristocrat being carried on a palanquin, sprawled out and enjoying the ride.

I mean, for me they effectively replace the car. We own one, but since we have the e-bike, I don’t drive at all. I use the trailer for shopping if needed. And yes, we used the trailer + the small seat behind my seat. Basically all three kids could ride with me, but the battery depletes fast and I am not sure about the general strain put on the bike’s structure with so much weight. The bike is not technically ours but leased from the company my wife works at. In Belgium, at some point the taxes get so high that people choose untaxed benefits at work (like a bike leasing or vouchers, even a company car) instead of salary hikes. We now own a second e-bike with two separate seats so we can have family trips. We’ll see how it works. To clarify: I do NOT believe that you can always replace a car with an e-bike. But in the rather wealthy area where we live, the bike infrastructure is great and everything is very walkable, so it is possible to greatly reduce your reliance on cars. The Netherlands are far superior to Belgium in this respect.

The Model X had it under a speaker cover. The model 3 didn’t have it listed in the user manual. Fans discovered under a rubber door pocket cover, you could remove a flushed mounted plastic tab and fish out a pull wire to open the door.

It wasn’t until 2024 that Model 3’s got a door release.

There might be some niche situation where it’s helpful but that’s not even relevant because there’s no way it would be legal on public roads in most places. I also strongly doubt that it would be able to do it safely and compensate for different weight distribution of the vehicle with different passengers and such.

Then there’s the “range issue” of being able to do that maybe a few times, at best, for a few seconds. Cool demo, but you’d think just a revamped Roadster would be enough. Do it with a Cybertruck without showering everyone with shrapnel and I might be impressed.

Elmo faked a tech demo showing a new car that can drive upside down thanks to vacuum suction and can fly thanks to compressed air rockets.

Fine print: the car that goes on sale is not able to do that, only a very limited run that is sold to select customers at an unknown price (read: they don’t sell it)

It’s like if a robot company does a tech demo where a dancing robot is actually a human wearing a costume, or a bartending robot is actually remotely controlled by a human with a VR headset

They did a demo of the new roadster model; they’ve strapped a suction fan and HPA thrusters to it so it can do 0 to 60mph in under a second, drive up walls, perform a running jump over a semi-truck without a ramp, spin and do a standing flip.

They demoed a car that was loaded with a shit load of compressed gas, then they had it do a kick flip over a line of cars and a semi truck. They also drove it up a massive inverted ramp and then had it flip over and land smoothly.

Looked cool as hell, but has absolutely no practical purpose other than allowing Nazi Musk to get headlines saying they have a flying car.
