I mean, The Hobbit was primarily written to be a children’s bedtime story. The fact that adults latched onto it was sort of an accident. Tolkien was primarily a linguist, not a writer. The reactions are because people are learning that the council’s conclusions were controversial. Before the council it was not a dominant view. A large portion of early church fathers (and mothers) would be considered heretics by Nicene Christians.
