The Tesla flying car is clearly a Spectacle for Fools, but the gas being used is basically compressed air and doesn’t contribute to our greenhouse gas problem.

There’s plenty of other aspects to this to make fun of that are factually accurate.

If your gas is compressing itself, it’s creating a high-pressure environment in your, err, guts. That means it’s creating a lower-pressure area outside - i.e. you are sucking gas in to compress it.

Farting or belching - i.e. ‘gas’ in American - is rapid /decompression/, not compression.

(In practice, I think it’s rather more a case of gas is /created/ by biological means, i.e. it is not ‘compressing’ anything per se.)

It’s possible that you suck more for not being able to take a joke, though.

“It” does nothing of the sort.

But yes, it’s likely that an electric cryo pump would be used to fill a feed tank at the fuelling station, I wasn’t expecting it to be fuelled by unicorn farts.

Now, since apparently we have to walk this step by step for you, how do you think the electric compressor is powered? The clue is in the name “electric”, if that helps.

And for your gold star - try to work out where “electricity” comes from. In the US. You know, “clean coal” country.

Why are you responding in such a condescending tone?  Was my reply in any way as rude?  Do you hold all of your internet conversations by talking down to your fellow contributors? You don’t know who we are; you don’t have any right to reply like that. Grow up. Keep your “gold stars” and “walk step by step for you’s” to yourself. If you can’t be civil to strangers, then keep your opinions to yourself.

The compressed gas that “it” uses is compressed with electricity, yes.

…and yes, I realize the gas is not compressed onboard, and that the car doesn’t accomplish this on “its” own.  I’m sorry my simpler phrasing upset you so. If I say “the car uses a DC power supply,” I don’t mean to imply that the car connects “itself” to the charger either. “It” (the car) utilizes a compressed gas source, which was electrically powered.

Sure, that minuscule amount of electricity could be generated by way of fossil fuel power plants, but seeing as how this is a Tesla demo, probably a one-off (assuming Musk is lying about delivering - as he usually is), and Tesla’s “gigafactory” uses a massive solar farm in addition to the local power grid (which may include fossil fuels), it’s nearly a wash. A tiny “carbon footprint,” if any at all. Hell, manufacturing those bottle lids probably generates a larger carbon footprint.

Like [@[email protected]]\ said, there are plenty of other aspects to this to make fun of.  Arguing that the compressed gas is somehow contributing to its global footprint is stupid. But then, so is arguing with strangers on the internet.

              Were you homeschooled?

The energy required to flip a tonne of car is not “miniscule”, and that is the amount of energy the compressor needs to put into the gas - plus all the additional energy required because compressor and cryopump are not terribly efficient; and to cap it all, compressed gas jets are also an incredibly inefficient way to lift anything, you get roughly 25% of the compressed energy out as kinetic energy (there is a reason, after all, that SpaceX use them for attitude control, not to actually launch rockets.)

All told, hovering a 1 tonne car (which is generous, given the weight of a Tesla) with gas thrusters would require about 3 kWh of energy input per second - the fact that it gets stored as a gas instead of in a battery does not suddenly make this magic fairy dust with no environmental impact.

Back of the envelope maths and the comments from Tesla’s own engineers suggests that demo used 300kWh minimum - more if they used industrially supplied liquid nitrogen. Which is to say one numbnuts trick to impress 8 year olds used as much energy as driving a typical EV 1,500km.

If you think that is not a negative for the environment, well… Why would I expect anything else from a septic?

The anti-EU narratives have been pushed so widely, also by Musk himself, that even comics like the one above are spreading them uncritically. The tethered caps are not about reducing xarbon footprint but about reducing waste in our environment and high costs of cleaning effort. Yet another EU myth, especially popular among tech bros btw.

Yeah - they did a survey on european beaches and checked which plastic items they were finding. And then they tried to find a way to solve the issue by regulating the production. They did find a lot of bottle caps and plastic q-tips and then they did something against that. That is a really good way of doing things.

I think littering and contributing more plastic waste into the environment can definitely be considered part of a person’s carbon footprint. More indirectly than burning gasoline, but it reduces recycling and requires more manufacturing and natural resources than if the plastic wasn’t wasted/littered.

In any case, it’s a pretty big stretch to label this content as “Anti-EU”, at worst they used poor word choice to make their point.

If they had said “to protect the environment” instead of “to reduce my carbon footprint” it’s the exact same comic. Tesla/capitalism is the butt of the joke here

The point is that there are tons of consumer products being made annoying so we can all feel like we’re doing our part. Meanwhile, the people generating the most pollution continue to do so.

Sure, it was compressed air. But the power required to compress the ~3 seconds of air thrusters could have driven an electric car for over a hundred miles.

So this Tesla rocket flying car thing I’m hearing about is actually taken seriously?

Like, actual human beings with brains actually believe this shit will happen? I mean, come on now… You have a brain, evolution given, please, use it?

This is another musk thing. Elmo tells obvious lies, his groupies will repeat it as fact ad nauseum, the news sites will obviously publish said nonsense as fact because of course, and three weeks later people will have forgotten about the next bullshit lie from Elmo. Rinse and repeat, he has pulled this bullshit off dozens of times now and he keeps getting away with it. Other people would have been sued into the ground but Elmo? Nope. I guess the guy has charisma or something (the something doing all the lifting because claiming that musk has charisma is just idiotic)

  • Is he starting his own rocket league? Did one of his brood start playing it and leon thought, “I could do that!”?

To be fair, leon has the most advanced thruster/sensor tech on the planet via SpaceX. Making an empty metal box do a flip is trivial.

Instead Musk just goes we can kick flip a car!!! The same presentation goes from interesting tech to eyerollingly cringe. Absolutely a cool tech but has no business being sold in a car road legal or not. It should stay a prototype tech demo.
