I remember a few years back facebook had me ‘verify’ my account by sending them a copy of my ID. I sent them a stock image of a random dude flipping the bird and my ‘ID’ got accepted.
For a shady steam keys reselling site, I once sent a picture of my id with literally everything blacked out but my name (they had that from my credit card), and it got accepted too
“for the children”… Lol.
Quite the irony when those children are being used as tools. Their age is weaponised against them and projected towards everyone.
Sure, I can give you a government ID
it won’t be real or it won’t be mine
good luck verifying it with the South African department of home affairs
it takes months to get an actual government ID issued
if I have to wait that long,
I’m using a different website

I found out that when confronted with ID surveillance I don’t really want to visit that site after all.
Companies keep pushing security onto the user at the same time as demanding more personal data.
They can suck my…
they have data breaches all the time, if they don’t outright sell it, even to ICE. It’s insane if them to try and frame this as secure
Here, just use mine.

Expires in 3024? Nice.
Stop I can only get so eShrekt
I am kinda on the fence with that. On one hand, I am wary of control it may give. On the other, we have children watching hardcore p##n and bots and troll farms spreading disinformation.
I would counter:
Then why are these things okay for adults?
There is nothing normal about mass consumption of troll farms and bots. The user facing internet is broken and unhealthy, and it’s absolutely mad we pretend like it isn’t. Banning it from children is not a fix.
Middle schoolers passing around deepfakes nudes is pretty messed up, yep, but again I argue: why are they so accessible in the first place? It wouldn’t be a widespread problem as something from the depths of the internet, but it is when it’s a freaking Twitter service.
EDIT: I will admit the later is a sticky issue though, as it’s pretty easy for some random shop in a distant country to set up a deepnude storefront on a website. Even if we kill their ability to market it via ads, little shits around the world will find it and pass it around.
It needs a cultural fix, I suppose. Parents need to teach it as taboo, like they do for creepy IRL behavior, and that + not so trivial accessibility should dampen it.
Middle schoolers passing around deepfakes nudes
I have no data to confirm this but I’d wager it’s disproportionately kids using that kind of stuff. I think the vast majority of adults who want to look at some titties or whatever are perfectly happy cranking it to one of the millions of freely available pictures and videos out there.
Hell, last month I had to factory reset some kid’s phone because they downloaded some “undressing app” that obviously turned out to be malware. I’ve helped adults and seniors with their tech before and they do dumb shit too but I’ve never seen one do that.
These kids need sex ed and tech aid. It’s one thing for a teenager to undress Jessica from history class in their mind, but it’s an entirely different one to download some dubious app and provide it with pictures of Jessica for it to effectively produce CSAM
Where are the parents those children belong to? Why do we need to parent for them?
Every child throughout history got up to secret exploring when they were out of their parents control. This happens to good parents and bad parents alike. It’s natural for children to explore the world and be curious about it’s dark corners. While we need parental supervision, we also need societal control. It takes a village to raise a child.
Don’t care. Not my kids and I didn’t volunteer to help raise them. Parenting is hard. Really sucks for them. Glad I didn’t choose that. I have zero fucking sympathy. Why should my privacy be violated because people don’t want to parent?
“Societal control” is probably this most dystopian thing I’ve read today.
Are “Stop Signs” dystopic? Don’t answer. It seems you’ve got your mind made up, and that’s cool.
Yeah! We’ve got to add more stop signs because of all the reckless child drivers on the road!
Idk, I watched hardcore porn as a teenager and I turned out fine. Didn’t everyone? Masturbating to magazines or PG13 movies somehow seems more perverted than porn.
I think he means children in this case. Like a teenager is literally more than fine looking at the stuff as long as its not some fucked up shit (but that applies to everyone really).
The thing op misses, is the usecase of parental controls. Children should absolutely be guided around the internet, until they grow up to being teenagers.
None of “for the children” initiatives do anything good for them, prevents anything or saves any of them. Also, in most cases politicians who actually rape kids are always exempt.
As a rule of thumb, never trust any “for the children”, “for security” or “against terrorism”. It never is about those things, and even if some of the people involved think it is, it gives the ill intended people great weapons against free speech, privacy, healthy democracy… These slogans are always to target people’s irrationality and stop them from actually having logical thinking about the implications. They used them in the past and continue to do so because they work.
The people spreading misinformation will continue to do so because they sooner or later end up in power, and none of these laws will control the government, only the people. Which in itself should trigger you to not trust it.
If it was about the children, they would have done something with the Epstein files.
Kids will absolutely find a way around that. Pornhub and similar sites are nowhere close to real hardcore stuff which I will bet all my money on will not implement age verification. Kids will just shift to less mainstream websites with little or no moderation like allowing zoophilia. Even if they somehow censured it almost all like CP how long do you think it will take them to download Tor or a free VPN harvesting their data? There will definitely be that one kid in 6th grade who will spread the word. Even we as kids browsed darknet that was only out of curiosity. Install spyware on your kid’s hardware if you want them to have hard time bypassing it until of a proper age either by buying their own hardware or being smarter than their parents.
As for disinformation. My discord accounts are getting banned left and right for bot-like activity even though I only use them to separate identities and are 100% human traffic but without a no longer valid email. Idk how scammers bypass it but they probably steal user accounts.
TLDR; It solves nothing but empowers bigger threats even without government overreach.
Why can’t I upvote this more than once?!
Duh, because you need a govt id to upvote it twice.
Oh, got it. Yeah, I want to do that. But… uh… where do I upload it, I don’t see it?
I wanted to start using Monero. But found I have no way of buying it in my country without giving gov ID to the exchange.
Some Know Your Customer legalities. Fucking sucks.
The only other way is sketchy P2P trade sites where you have to trust the person at the other end.
DM me dude I can send you
Using Local Monero (I’m assuming what you are referring to) is fairly safe in low amounts ($50)
I just meant xmr but https://localmonero.co/lolks closed.
But it’s the same for any crypto here.

Complain to your local government. Yes, many websites are guilty of surveillance capitalism themselves and are lobbying for it, but the recent push was largely in response to new surveillance laws passed by governments under various guises, such as protecting the youth.
My government are pushing for this stuff though.
Which is why I am here now instead of on reddit where I got fed up of being asked to submit for facial and ID scans. Fuck that! I have seen some of my comments online, there is no way I want my ID permanently attached to that.
welcome! great choice!
I originally planned to just join the boycott for only a month, like 2 years ago because of the third party apps thing
but I ended up never going back because lemmy is so much more chill, interesting and fun to me
If they associate my online identity with my real one, i am so cooked, i said certain stuff…
Yes, I assumed so. Welcome to Lemmy! I meant: Complain to your government about it! Only when they are pressured by enough citizens is they’re a chance that they may reconsider.
They need it to profile new models for their trump island in Albania
But have you considered purchasing this bauble online
Strava wants my birthdate now … like wtf …
My favorite is 1941-12-07. Bots can’t tell it’s fake, but American humans will know it probably is.
Not an American. Can you explain?
This was when the Japanese entered the second world war by attacking Pearl Harbor in Hawaii.

It boggles my mind why Americans and the UK would accept this.
Wait, no it doesn’t.
I don’t accept it. But wtf can I do about it? Other than abandon every platform that asks for ID. But I have already done that. Which is why I am here.
Yeah, it’s very simple. Any website that asks for ID clearly doesn’t want any traffic.
The problem is the corruption at the level where accepting or not matters. There’s always corruption, but competing interests can help dissipate organized attempts at it.
I haven’t seen a platform ask for it yet.
Its happening in the EU too.
It’s following more of an OAuth model in the EU rather than give private-company-selling-your-data-off-to-Palantir model.
Nobody is accepting it, this is the Sociopathic Oligarchs paying the politicians to shove this down our throats.
Right now, the most effective solution is to stay on a full court offensive press against MAGA, steadily activating every apathetic voter possible, forcing every MAGA to face their fascism, take back Congress in November, and turn it into one enormous investigative body with a thousand tentacles.
Then we can start putting them in prison for their CRIMES.
And for those who say the Dems will never do that: Fuck you, YOU are the problem. Instead of signaling that you’ll accept their failure AGAIN, you need to be telling them that they’d better do the jobs we’re electing them to do, OR ELSE!
Begs the question why a lot of your society idealizes the mechanisms that give rise to those Sociopathic Oligarchs. They didn’t spring out of nowhere. Elon Musk is not anyone special. Trump isn’t anyone special. It’s not a just switch the dial problem, it’s a deeply rooted institutional one that will either churn out mild oligarchs at best or wannabe fascists at worst. Trump thrives on an exaggeration of an identity that does exist for a lot of Americans.
Your current system will never do that, and you’ve trained yourself to believe the only viable solution that is widely accepted throughout the world, secession, makes you a slave supporter. There are some states that would start putting them in prison for their crimes, but which ironically enough will never be allowed to by the same gaslighters that want to praise the original secessionists.
So what was it, was the war against secession a war against slavery, or was it a war to maintain American Hegemony for the oligarchs that could see beyond their slave farms and who ended up coining the modern day corporation? Because if it was to fight slavery, gotta tell you, the EU allowed the UK to leave without a problem and without weakening their regulations for private interests.
we don’t accept it current government is pushing for it regardless of lack of it in their manifesto I didn’t even vote for them
