Ha! I was using unity when they lost their shit. HAHAHA How does it feel?? Lmao I kid. But no, yeah, that sucks :/ 🫂 I would say hopefully epic pulls their head out of their ass, but not only has it been up there from the start, but it seems like people and companies that taste AI get hooked in because it’s like easily accessible ragebait catered just for you. You feel like you’re getting stuff done, but when the dust settles, you realize everybody knows youre an asshole but you and you accomplished nothing but shitting in your own mouth and trying to convince everybody else to have a taste.

They don’t. It’s just that only the worst ones make the news.

Although there have also been a bunch of “project bans all AI contributions” stories as well.

Once upon a time I worked for a company that provided DSL internet.

One day we got a call from a customer complaining that they had no connection.

We investigated and discovered that their line had been completely cancelled from under us and ask the customer what happened to their telephone line.

They said they had set up VoIP on their internet connection, and thus no longer had need of their telephone line and so they cancelled it.

The telephone line on which we had provisioned their DSL internet…

“No more hand-written code” sounds to me an awful lot like “we don’t need that telephone line any more”.

The real shame here is that the fall-out won’t be as sudden and the people who ought to be getting the brunt of it will manage to squirm out of any responsibility.

While I get what you’re saying, you don’t actually need POTS service on a copper line to have DSL work. I used to sell DSL circuits without telephony services in one of my first technology jobs. We’d order “dry circuits” and pipe data only through Copper Mountain or Paradyne branded gear (pretty sure both companies are dead now). Most telephone companies wouldn’t let you do this because they wanted to prop up POTS line sales, not because it was technically necessary.

This was the in the UK over a decade ago, back in the bad old days of migration codes and everything being underpinned by BT Openreach who basically had their arm twisted to allow other ISPs to exist and use that infrastructure. And even then they guarded everything jealously (and sometimes incompetently, but that’s another story).

We didn’t sell telephone lines, so every DSL we sold was on an existing POTS line that each customer already had. Most of our customers wouldn’t have known about getting a separate POTSless line even if that was possible at the time. And the customer in question certainly didn’t.

They had it installed on their company’s one and only telecommunications line. Of all the hundreds of customers I dealt with over the years, it only ever happened the once… although we did have to warn at least one other customer off the idea when it happened to come up in conversation.

Yeah I worked for a company that sold DSL in ATT and CenturyLink areas in the United States. We could also sell stuff with telephony from ATT, but we had some ancient agreement that let us sell DSL using their lines without telephone service. They were ordered in ATT’s system as “alarm circuits”. We also could run service 3x further out because of some old tech called ReachDSL. It was only 256k to 1.5M, depending on distance, but most of the people on it could only get dial up at the time, so this was the best they had available.

          Those were indeed dark days.

Thank you for the wise way of putting this, because I was getting excited with the whole “too subtle and sudden approach of justice to escape it” opposite emotion-driven interpretation, where dangerous fools always escape justice with some scratches, leaving others to suffer, but this time they will get complacent. Like with debt or with antivaxxer ideas.

As much as I hate the ongoing “AI” scam, and as many hours as I’ve wasted on Bethesda’s games (or on modding them), in Bethesda’s case (especially modern Bethesda) I actually believe the slop machine might actually be an improvement.

At least the code for the unofficial patches will be in it’s training set, which is a start…

It would probably be equally bad. Current systems can’t hold enough context in memory to manage the architecture of a system. Development is going to be piecemeal, and reimplement a bunch of stuff. Like if you had a new developer take over every week.

So individually each piece would probably be better, but overall it’s going to be an even bigger spaghetti mess.

I’m not convinced they’ll crash and burn. Fortnite still prints money. Limited-time skins and the continued existence of children still works. Plus, fortnite has hundreds of “games” within it at this point just from Epic, plus all kinds of user-created modes. It’s pubg, it’s roblox, it’s Lego, it’s hot wheels. Honestly more shocked that it sounds like this Disney venture is making separate titles and not just more fortnite modes.

I think most people react most strongly to the lack of quality in purely AI generated things. Especially art projects. No one likes buggy games and AI doesn’t change that. If they can manage to be one of the few to pull off a polished and successful game entirely generated by AI the I’d wager the actual backlash will be far more limited. But most people have now come across at least a few generated slop projects and they tend to leave a bad taste. So resistance to supporting the decision to go all in on something that has generally provided distasteful outcomes is to be expected, no?

              Precisely.

I have serious and significant objections to how LLM codegen models have and are being created/trained, marketed, deployed, and used, for a whole litany of ethical, personal, and professional reasons.

To my deep chagrin, I and my team have effectively been forced to start using those tools to expedite some of our work lately, largely due to the very fucky and understaffed state my team has been in for the better part of a year. So, yeah, I do use claude, and I am fully versed in how to get higher-quality output from it by including adversarial and specialist agents in workflows, and how to present goals in a way that you minimize nonsense and maximize targeted, incisive agentic changesets. But I always treat that agentic output as a draft, and wherever possible, give my workflows a manually, tightly coded baseline example to serve as a change template. I categorically refuse to yeet LLM output into a PR - in fact, there was a multi-month period earlier this year where a bunch of contractors were doing just that, and I consistently took the piss out of them - and after enough restatements to make it clear they weren’t listening and didn’t care, we fired three of them.

There is a reasonable and incisive way to employ codegen tools, but you absolutely have to know what you’re doing, and you have to be conscientious about it.

Fully cuck coding is generally a recipe for disaster, including horrifying security vulnerabilities, awful performance, and various exciting categories of bugs that can yield interesting prod issues and outages. It will tank your code quality if you let it - and worst of all, it will make you a worse engineer if you intellectually lean on it too much. Delegation of your critical reasoning and technical aptitude to the clankers is a great way to allow those skills to atrophy to an alarming degree, and on top of that, you will have a much shakier understanding of the systems you are building and supporting.

Cuck coded games and launchers are demonstrably awful.

If you don’t understand why forbidding your employees to write any code manually as a matter of corporate policy is a deeply stupid idea, I feel pretty confident in saying that you’re clearly not a software engineer.

Except they do, because it says so in the article. It even says it in the title of the article if you’re too lazy to open the link

In an internal messaged reviewed by Bloomberg, a game director supposedly told staff there would be “no more hand-written code”

                Seems pretty straightforward to me.

Companies have been very forthcoming with their AI use and development, actually.

And you can tell when it starts getting used. Suddenly the UI will be replaced with the ubiquitous Clod™ look. Then the bugs and awful performance start rearing their head. If you use programs, it’s plainly obvious that the quality of software over the last year has plummeted.
