A couple of years ago I woke up from a rare afternoon nap. But I thought it was morning, because the sun outside was setting so the light was dim, which I took for the sun rising, which is usually when I get up. The time was about 6:30, which was the right time for me to wake up. So I got my morning coffee, and sat down in front of the computer for a bit of browsing. It was a typical morning, until I noticed it was getting darker outside, instead of lighter. I peeked out the bedroom window to the southern sky to see if it was overcast. Nope.

Anyway, it took me about twenty minutes to realize it wasn’t morning and to remember that I had laid down for a nap.

When I was like 21 my sister messed with me. I was taking a nap during summer break. She busted into my room and yelled, “get up! you’re going to be late for the bus!” I almost had a heart attack and it took like a full minute to realize I hadn’t taken the bus in 7 years, I was on summer break from college, and she was a total jerk.

Maybe we should be asking why school is genuinely traumatizing.

That is exactly how I define a great nap as an adult. The more disoriented I wake up, the better.

One of the best naps I took in a while I woke up with my head at the foot of the bed. I did not go to sleep in that orientation.
