Apparently, Japan has one of the “cheapest” prices for the game while elsewhere it becomes a rip off for some reason (as referenced, in green: is converted from JPY while in red: is the price of the same thing in USA, Europe, UK, Australia, Brazil & Poland to name a few places).
The thing with pricing is that different countries have their own rules on taxes, so it’s kind of finicky to compare (as US has sales tax added upon checkout while EU includes VAT). The weird part is that both $ and € use the same numerical figures despite them being different currencies, as in 80€ is treated the same as $80 when the conversion does not match at all when you look it up.

I plan on doing what I did for GTAV: wait ten years for it to be free on Epic or whatever, play it, then go “huh, yeah I guess that was alright” and never think about it again.
US has added sales tax
I have never paid a cent in sales tax on digital goods, and I do not live in a state without sales tax. Steam doesn’t charge tax, niether does PSN. Price says $79.99, you pay exactly $79.99.
It’s still overpriced and may actually be the worst GTA in history.
I don’t think Steam doesn’t pay sales tax. It’s probably just included in the final amount.
Steam absolutely charges sale tax in addition to the base price in my area (I think my state passed a law some 10 years ago to capture lost tax revenue from online sales).
Do I think it‘s objectively overpriced? No, it‘s the biggest game on the planet that will sell stupid amounts almost no matter what they do. I‘m actually surprised it‘s not 99.99
Do I think it‘s subjectively overpriced? Absolutely. I‘m not paying more than like 25ish bucks for a game. The games I paid more for (mostly launch games) I’ve come to regret the majority of. They mostly just sit in my library and become part of the already huge backlog.
Yes, in every country. But they’ll make billions all the same.
Personally I consider it overpriced in every single country. Video games should not cost this much.
Could you elaborate on why you think it shouldn’t cost that much?
Also, just to be clear, I am not planning to buy it at full price, at release, or maybe even ever.
People don’t really scoff when sometime spends three figures on a virtual hat or a gacha pull.
I know it’s not the sentiment here, but it’s a price I’m willing to pay.
Assuming they flood it with MTX, spyware, and unnecessary online connectivity, I value it at approx. -$100 (USD, feel free to convert that to your currency of choice.)
Someone would have pay me $100 to install it, and even then I can’t promise I’d play it much. So yes, I do think it’s overpriced, by ~$200
They might as well make it free to play. They made most of their money on “micro” transactions.
I ain’t playing it either way.
I will not pay more than $30 for a game. That means I wait for AAA games, usually about 5 years. By then they’ll be optimized, patched, and all the DLC will be included.
Reminder to everyone that GTAVI costs $100, and you get some of it disabled in the $80 version
I’m not gonna buy either because fuck rockstar, but let’s be honest. The game is 80. The other 20 is just for some cosmetics.
Good answer, fuck rockstar
Idk if I would call missions and characters on a single-player game “cosmetic”
“Track down a variety of abandoned classic and work-in-progress project cars and revitalise them to their former glory in this special commission from eccentric collector and local fixer, Wyman. Restore these and make them your own, including four vehicles that are only available in the Ultimate Edition.”
So you get 4 extra cars in ultimate. I’d hardly call those missions, but meh.
The rest is just other vehicles, skins, tattoos, etc.
Also "PTT Youngin$ Compound and Scores
One of Leonida’s loudest and most socially active gangs, the PTT Youngin$ grow premium hydroponics in places you’d least expect. Find a way to raid the PTT Youngin$ Illegal Goods Store in Southside Vice City and escape safely to score some special items and distinct contraband. "
Sort of sounds like a mission as well, but in the style of those "? " on the map in open world games that take 5 mins at max.
From what I understand, it provides access to a handful of shops in game. This is where you get the clothes/tattoos/etc. The shops are present in the $80 version, but you can only access them after paying extra. I would absolutely call that locking content behind a paywall.
Or, alternatively, it’s $80, but they’ll let you plus it up with some bullshit that doesn’t matter for $20.
Idk if I would call missions and characters on a single-player game “some bullshit that doesn’t matter”
Oh, you’ve never seen the throwaway bonus missions on a game SKU before? Truthfully, no one knows but Rockstar how substantive that extra stuff is. But my gut and past experience tells me that if it was actually worth seeing, they wouldn’t have padded out the list with a bunch of variations on guns and cars, of which there will be many even in the base game, because it’s Grand Theft Auto. The missions that we know about, which you have to read on one or two select pages but they’re not present on others, is some kind of mission around collecting cars for some fence; I’m not losing sleep over not having that and keeping an extra $20 in my pocket.
Tell yourself whatever you like, but it’s kind of sad that after learning that it’s not what you thought it was, you’ve doubled down
I knew what it was before we had this conversation.
Oops, I thought you read what you’ve been writing. Won’t happen again
Yeah, it’s overpriced. Luckily I have a laundry list of scumbag things done by both Rockstar and the publisher Take-Two so not buying this game is an easy decision

We don’t even know how it plays yet. We know almost nothing.
If it’s a typical GTA game, yes over priced.
If it does something amazing maybe the price is justified. But I can’t think of many games that would qualify.
Take a look at the exchange rate of the Yen compared to the Euro over the last 10 years and it should be clear why the Japanese prize is “cheap”. The Yen has lost a lot of its value, while Japanese wages haven’t risen accordingly. So prizing the game at an equivalent prize to EU or US would mean that the game would simply be unaffordable to Japanese people.

I don’t think I can consider it “overpriced” before I even played it. If it’s a 20 hour mediocre story - yeah, it probably is overpriced. But if I put as much time into GTA VI as I’ve put into GTA V, it’s going to be a great deal for me personally.
As of this comment, you had a couple downvotes, and I just want to point out how absurd it is to downvote someone who… Is literally just participating in the conversation prompted by OP.
Agreed. Downvoting for wrongthink is second nature here though, sadly.
