    Get used to it.

Anyone with a Claude Code account can spew out a Lemmy (or any other service) client and make antisocial changes and dump it in the App Store. ✨

As a lemming, this whole drama is categorical censorial bullshit, but also peak comedy because the fuckwad got caught and publicly called on the carpet

As a software engineer, this is stupid implementation, because you can trivially make this a configurable blocklist of strings and regex. It never needed to even be an argument. Which of course means that it was never about the implementation.

As an open source enthusiast, take the software engineer response, but add: and he’s intentionally pushing his (visibly fucked up and warped) worldview and values onto users, and he tried to obfuscate it to be sneaky. That falls in the realm of malware imo - as in, intentionally mutating the functionality of a project with a specific intent of impact on users, and then attempting to hide the evidence. And then he got called out on it, and got super butthurt, and rage quit the whole goddamn platform.

    TL;DR: Good fucking riddance.

Definitely the actions of a person who should be unquestioningly trusted to be the sole arbiter of determining what is fine and dandy and what goes too far on Lemmy. Totally not indicative of every legitimate concern that every single person opposing this brought up being accurate, surely not!

My favorite reply from him when I called him out in a different thread: “why can’t you just let people use their own computers how they choose”

I’m guessing he has never heard the wisdom of not throwing stones in a glass house. The cognitive dissonance is hilarious, though.

Is lemmy turning into reddit or something? I just see bits and pieces of this drama, don’t really care enough to deep dive in it… but found out I’m on the “list”.

no, someone tried to turn it into Reddit using their frontend to try and act like an admin on instances they’re not an admin on, acting like an entitled reddit powermod/admin doling out shadowbans; and the fediverse collectively told him to fuck himself.

Most people, I’d think, would consider thousands of other people yelling all at once telling you you’ve done a tremendously dumb thing, to be a fine moment for self-reflection. AdmiralPatrick is not one of those people.

The most dumbfounding thing to me is that the list isn’t even base64 encoded. Its just sitting in the repo plain-text. I can’t decided if its laziness, a lack of data integrity standards, lack of imagination, or if he wanted all this drama one day.

Frankly, my own block list is huge. Mostly keywords, very few users. I would recommend it to everyone. Any social media is unbearable without blocking shit out. Everyone should personalise blocklists to their tastes.

But you can’t make this decision for people. This is why I also don’t like that some instances defederate a lot of other instances they don’t like (and no one tells newbies). There’s a niche for pre-populated block lists that are available and curated and transparent (like for ad-blockers).

Don’t put words in my mouth. I said, quote, that I wasn’t upset, after you made a comment implying I was and that I should seek out a refund – I don’t use the Tesseract frontend, and never have. That doesn’t mean I “don’t actually care” about someone trying to play Reddit admin and sneakily impose their will onto the rest of the fediverse.

If you want to make a stupid argument, that’s fine; but make it on your own, don’t rope me into it.

See, to me, you sound like an alt of AdmiralPatrick, or possibly one of his few remaining friends, and seem to be here exclusively to make passive aggressive comments at his detractors and/or run defense for him. I wonder why that would be…

If your free software is borderline malware (which it is because it’s intentionally depriving users access to certain information with a deliberate attempt hide that fact from the users) I think people have a right to be harsh.

If it is malware then harshness is justified, but I’d be willing to debate over the strict definition of malware and whether it technically applies here.

But I don’t think most of the harshness we’ve seen is actually borne of that kind of outrage. Even the OP of this meme says they are not upset and are having a wonderful time.

I never said it’s strictly malware, I said borderline malware. It can’t be strictly malware because most definitions of malware focus on the malware taking (some or full) control of the system or extracting valuable information, things that generally pose as a direct threat of damage to the end user or system.

But restricting user access to information without the user knowing information is being restricted and taking deliberate steps to hide this is being done in the first place is all malicious behavior. If you asked from a layman if this should be considered malware behavior or not most people would consider this malware behavior, hence borderline malware.

And I don’t see how it not being “strictly malware” would change anything. People are outraged by what it is doing and how it is doing it, not by whether it fits the strict definition of malware.
