Here we go again with the preorders for digitally downloaded games. Why, why have we not learnt from all the botched AAA game launches?

Preorders for AAA games made sense when supply was scarce, demand high, and games pretty much working at launch day.

This is not the timeline we live in anymore.

But what if the bytes run out? What then?

I buy physical anyway, and have never had an issue just going into a shop and picking up a game on day one.

Get a small SSD and just put that game on it?

      https://screenrant.com/gta-6-file-size-200gb-rumors-gamers-react/

According to GTA 6 Intel in a post that has since been taken down, Grand Theft Auto VI will “be just under 200GB”, with other “sources” also corroborating this claim. Of course, this rumor has not been officially confirmed by Rockstar Games or Take-Two Interactive, and it was already clear to fans that GTA VI will be quite demanding when it comes to storage.

I’m mildly annoyed about this, I want to boycot it on principle because the whole union thing, but I’m going to have to buy it for my boy so I’ll end up playing it anyway.

It’s very unlikely to be playable on the steam deck, so I won’t be playing it. That’s my only gaming device. Looking forward to seeing others enjoying it tho.

Not coming to PC until ~2032 anyway.

Not buying a console slower than my PC just to play this at <1080p <30fps with upscaling.

Anyone who pre-orders a digital product that can’t actually run out of stock is a true mystery to me. Just wait and see. If you’re I’ve of those eager to pay this, you’ve already waited literally years. Add a few days, see if it’s actually playable and not a buggy mess.

In defense of preorders, even if they can’t run out of stock, servers can get overwhelmed. If they also do preloading and don’t fuck up a day 0 patch, you can ensure you can play the game immediately.

I still wouldn’t preorder this kind of game, I wouldn’t trust them not to botch it every way imaginable, but I’m reminded of the Silksong release, which I would’ve trusted with a preorder and could’ve avoided dealing with Steam going down when trying to buy it ;D

To be honest, if any game had enough demand to run out of physical stock, it might be GTA6.

Even then, though, I wouldn’t trust preorders enough to do it. Stores love taking preorders, but they don’t factor that in with the amount of stock they’ll receive.

I remember seeing posts from folks who lined up to pick up their preorders of big games like Spider-Man and Tears of the Kingdom on release day, only to get told by the store that they didn’t actually have enough stock to honor everyone’s preorder.

Not saying it didn’t happen. But I have preordered a small handful of games in the past, and never had that be my personal experience. One was even TotK. I feel like that speaks more towards that specific store’s management than it does to anything else, personally.

I presume they’re also printing physical copies, in which case preorders are still useful to secure a copy day 1. Especially if you’re getting it shipped, because if you wait until day 1 to buy it then you’re actually waiting a few more days for shipping.

Honestly, seeing as how Rockstar turned GTA 5 into a microtransaction machine after it was already a $60 game, I am so wary of buying it that I might just skip out entirely. I’m not looking to fund Rockstar’s next decade and a half with a single higher price game and whatever the new Shark Cards are.

I’m not at all a “never preorder” guy and will happily pre order games I know I’m going to like.

That being said this game will be the only GTA game for the next 1/4 of my life so I also feel no pressure to actually buy it on release.
