On one hand, I get it. Some of what made Halo CE a great FPS at the time has basically been reused (and expanded upon) by nearly every FPS since then, so it makes a lot of sense to modernize it to catch up.
On the other hand, it feels funky to grab the original and give it this overhaul. Why not tell a new story if you’re going to make so many changes anyways?
I say this after buying various straightforward remakes, but I think switching things up gives it more justification for existing. The original still exists. Why not use it as a base and change things up?
They claim it’s because they’re using Unreal Engine for the first time and wanted to test the waters by remaking a game they know well. Honestly it just makes them sound even lazier in my book. That and the rumors of massive amounts of generative AI used for development.
Sure, and if 343 studios hadn’t burnt so much fan trust with their last two releases people might be willing to go along with that. I think fans are just sick of not getting a good new Halo game and what they’re doing now seems to most fans like just a cash grab.
It’s not like unreal engine is anything new either, they already contract out work so lots of talent to pull from for the actual technical parts.
You missed nothing if you didn’t. 5 setup a great story, was morphing into a great galaxy spanning adventure finally ready to move on from covenant vs humans. And then they ignored it all for Infinite which felt more like a DLC for an unreleased game.
I thought 5 was dumb. No! 4. 4 was dumb. 4 was the one where they said “uhh uhh covenant splinter faction, sanghelli are scary again”, right?
I was so disappointed by the weapons too. They completely flattened all the interesting differences between factions, quite a feat when adding a whole third set of them.
Except of course for the rocket launcher that shoots rockets that explode into rockets. That was neat.
They’ve been doing a bad job of writing new stories. Fumbled it already with 4, 5, and Infinite. Maybe put enough time after Infinite for people to not groan as much as before about the next antagonist pivot
id imagine remaking something with an established story line is easier to do for an outsourced team.
keep in mind, none of the multiplayer stuff is being remade, a multiplayer game is being made by halo studios themselves. whatever this team isnthats doing the outsourced work is solely working on modernizing the campaigns. its be extremely silly to rerelease the multiplayer modes with them and splinter the playerbase lobbies

So many game sequels started that way, but then were built up into their own games ones they’d proved out the engine.

Oh yeah. I don’t think I even finished 5 and I have not been keeping up. Did I even play 5? Ehh.

Aka “Claude rewrite this in unreal engine”
That will be $34billion in tokens, you’re welcome.
Except, let’s not forget, the original source code is lost and this would be, at best, based on an already flawed and inferior pc port

because that requires more money. why bother when you can just polish an old game and resell for the same price?
