My girlfriend, who is an honors teacher, mentioned that substitutes rarely engage in activities beyond following a basic lesson plan or showing a movie. I find it hard to comprehend the necessity of leaving notes, except for serving as a paper trail for the principal.

a paper trail for the principal

I was in a band called that. We mostly played punk, anti-war protest songs, and combinations thereof.

i can’t speak to middle/high, but elementary there’s a computer system where they leave notes. same place they leave the sub plans and discipline and grades and shit. I would imagine it’s similar. My wife only sees her subs on days where she has to work and still needs a substitute - she just has stuff to do outside the classroom (yeah life is not all gumdrops and chocolate in substitute time it’s maybe 25% gumdrop and 40% chocolate. the rest is meetings that could have been knife fights and nougat)

Guess my subs never snitched, cuz this is not a core memory I have. Not that none of my classes ever fucked with them. FFS, one of the regular subs we had was named SHEET. You know how easy it is to make that sound like “Mr. Shit?”

This reminded me of a block of middle school when our honors writing/literary teacher had to take some leave for health reasons. The substitute had no idea what they were getting into. Tried to talk to us like infants, so he quickly got our ire. Didn’t have a very strong resolve and this hadn’t gone unnoticed by one of the more snarky, bullish students. One day, the sub tried to relate to us by telling a personal story, one element of which was then turned back on him as an insult. The whole class couldn’t help but laugh. We’d destroyed this poor man. Once our teacher returned, she was certainly disappointed, but not entirely surprised either.

You know you have to finish your homewoek before you can play games on the computer or talk to your friends on the phone.
