Tbf, Homer Hickam is pretty well respected around NASA (he was the main character in October Sky). He also said in an interview later that he didn’t have any say over their internship being withdrawn, it was all the retweets with people hastagging NASA that got NASA’s people’s attention.

Loftus always does good stuff. My fave is her Lolita podcast which breaks down the history of its public perception. The book is a monster attack story, but told from the viewport of the monster. Using flowery language talking to a jury is explaining how it’s not that bad, and he eventually rots in prison. The self serving lies are both obvious and numerous .

But some-fucking-how most people think it’s a problematic star crossed lovers, romeo and juilet, age is just a number, forbidden romance BS. Multiple movies and stage have distorted the book into the exact thing the author was mocking.

Sorry. Random rant. But goddamn does Jamie do good work.

There are more stable geniuses out there with at least a modicum of social decorum who would love to have that position. 🤷

You can’t just go around talking to people that way, especially when all the other person was “Language”, and expect to be taken seriously. You’re a bit of an energetic, not properly socialized child at best (if you’re actually underage), developmentally delayed and rude at worst.

They’re not quirky, socially disruptive philosophers, lol. The person in OP is just a child who wasn’t properly socialized, now occupying the body of an adult, they’re not saying things with purpose but because they have no moral framework and didn’t develop into an adult well!

What’s better, according to you: not dropping f bombs and telling people to suck your dick because they tell you to mind your language, or doing so?

i decided to quit because i realized that the software i was supposed to be troubleshooting was intended to make missiles more aerodynamic and nothing to do with space.

I don’t doubt you saw something that scared you, but rockets and missiles are literally the same thing barring payload and trajectory and nobody is using bespoke software to puzzle out aerodynamics in 20xx, that’s table at the back of the college textbook stuff these days.

NASA didn’t even exist until after ICBMs were invented in both the US and the Soviet Union, so idk what y’all are on about. NASA used old ICBM tech to make rockets that weren’t for military use. Atlas, an ICBM, is what launched the first US astronauts to space during the Mercury program.

Also Von Braun was a Nazi

Yeah! What usefull things NASA has done for human kind?!

Other than: Memory foam, Portable cordless vacuum, Freeze-dried food, CMOS image sensors, Light-induced oxidation air scrubbers, Weight-resistance exercise equipment, Water purification systems, Firefighting protective gear, Highway safety grooves, Image stabilization technology, Anti-icing aircraft systems, Scratch-resistant lenses, Infrared ear thermometers, Insulation materials (radiant barrier foil), Aerogel insulation products, Programmable heart pacers (derived control tech), LASIK eye-surgery mapping technology, Advanced prosthetics components, Shock-absorbing athletic shoe materials, Improved tire rubber compounds, Portable blood analyzers, Satellite-based weather data applications, Crop monitoring algorithms, Oil spill mapping technologies, Baby formula nutrient fortification (DHA/ARA research contributions)

      • They also developed the technology that will cause nuclear hellfire when the US empire decides to start using it.

All that technology could have been developed by a peaceful entity but instead was used as PR to whitewash the atrocity of nuclear weapons development.

So what? JPL literally designs the rockets the US uses to create and maintain its nuclear arsenal. These aren’t refutations of the fact NASA is primarily a weapons research org in conjunction with the US DOD (Now DOW) and DARPA. Sorry to break it to you but Yanks are an evil, violent, malevolent culture that only cares about weapons and killing people.

Now now mr conspiracy theorists. We are not talking about yanks and their culture. We are talking about NASA.

The one agency in USA that is sience based, does most collaborations with other science based organisations and has done great scientific breaktroughs that has helped allmost every human on this planet and they have shared those findings

Think for a moment. If NASA was an integral part of american military development and filled with evil geniouses that want to subjucate rest of the world, why they are the agency that struggles the most to keep their funding and has been for years under the knive.

              • Now now Mr naive liberal who doesn’t understand how the world works

It isn’t a conspiracy theory to know that NASA designs the ICBMs and is deeply ingrained in the military industrial complex. Dude the agency was literally founded by Werner Von Braun the Nazi scientist who invented the V2 rockets. You just have a childs understanding of how the US military industrial complex works and believe the PR. In case you don’t know Public Relations is the American term for Propaganda. Look it up, both of those terms were coined by a psychologist named Bernays.

why they are the agency that struggles the most to keep their funding and has been for years under the knive.

Because they are now being privatized like everything else in the US, including utilities and infrastructure.

And mr. Nobel invented dynamite. Should i shun Nelson Mandela because he won the price named after somebody whose invention has brought death in large scale?

Science wont kill, the application does. Yelling about NASA being military monster institution is directing your energy to the wrong place. Be angry towards pentagon or to american goverment. Dont be try to bunch NASA in to the same group, just because you feel bad about the world. Their work has brought betterment for humanity and yelling how they are just nazies trying to end the world just eats their credibility.

Also i want to point out, that the naive person, who does not understand how the world works, here are you. Trying to neatly box huge institution with over 18 000 people working in, into one neat package, when in the real world you know everything is not black and white and sometimes people need to do things they dont necessary agree with, so later they can keep working on things they want to.

Also i dont consider myself as a liberal. Im from country with working democracy, and where politics are more intrique than blue versus red.

It’s not (entirely) true. Although NASA did initially rescind their offer to her, Hickam actually stepped in to help and convinced them to renew the offer. But only the initial part of the story survives because it’s rage-inducing and that is what fuels clicks… OP should be ashamed for only posting half the story. But here I am “generating engagement” so… here we are…

I’m unsure if his response is more on the policing language side or more on the advisory, watch out, if you’re going to work for a government agency that is funded by politicians there’s a certain expectation for public decorum that has to be maintained so some congressman looking to score points doesn’t use you as a reason to cut funding. My guess, given he tried to help reinstate the internship, is that it was the latter.

If you read the linked article you’ll see he didn’t have anything to do with her losing her offer. The National Space Council doesn’t have hire/fire power

“As it turned out, it was due to the NASA hashtag her friends used that called the agency’s attention to it long after my comments were gone”. - Homer Hickam. Also, I’ve read his book, it’s decent. He’s had a somewhat interesting life.
