China, dude, relax. With Trump in the white house you’re so perfectly poised to take the throne… why you gotta ruin it by being a petty betty?

We can talk a trade deal, but first you have to unwind.

Hitler executed about 8 million people, about 6 million of whom were jews.

Stalin starved about 20 million people.

Mao oversaw the Great Famine, following his order to kill all the sparrows in China, which lead to the starvation of 60 - 80 million people, depending on who’s counting.

Wikipedia lists the range of estimates for the famine as 15-46 million, so your numbers are beyond even the high end of that.

It also lists the number killed by the Nazis in mass killings as 11 million, which doesn’t account for at least 39 million combat deaths in the European theater of WWII, which Hitler started.

I’m not sure why you feel the need to minimize Hitler’s death toll or inflate Mao’s, as if even the lower range was not a dismal failure. The policy was so much of a failure that overall life expectancy in China stagnated, before continuing it’s meteoric rise. It was so bad that it was almost as bad as before the CPC came to power. You can see it very clearly around 1960 in this graph:

For comparison, we can see what Hitler did to German life expectancy (to say nothing of the rest of Europe’s):

Hitler intentionally killed about 5% of noncombatants in Nazi-controlled areas of Europe. We aren’t including soldiers at all. Under Mao, around 2.5% of China died in famines that could be partially attributed to aggressive industrialization. Arguing that Mao was worse for mismanaging industrialization than someone that industrialized mass murder to deliberately kill undesirables is horrendous historiography. It isn’t a coincidence that Mao is near universally loved in China while Hitler is near universally hated in Europe.

Life expectancy doubled under Mao. Foot binding was ended. He was instrumental in the victory of China against Japanese imperialism. China rapidly industrialized under Mao. Without Mao, there certainly would have been someone else playing his historic role, but the important factor is that it was indeed Mao that led China to liberation and helped set in stone the modern prosperous China.

Why do they even like Mao so much?

Same reason Americans love George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Adam Smith.

He’s a Founding Father of the modern nation, a spiritual progenitor of their economic philosophy, and a guy with tons of media to play up as nostalgia bait for the Chinese equivalent MAGA nationalists.

You’ll see Chinese nationalists leap to his defense the same way you see American nationalists get Big Mad when you talk about Jefferson raping his father-in-law’s illegitimate slave daughter. Or reminding them why the White House is that color and under which President it happened.

The average Americans have never heard of Adam Smith.

And the ones that have studied him are aware that he was a critic of capitalism, not a proponent of it.

      • I’ve never understood the stereotype that Americans idolize a bunch of old white guys from the 1700s.

Most people I know don’t give a single shit about them, and the ones that do are very vocal about their dislike of them.

It’s pretty widely accepted that they were all garbage human beings by today’s standards.

If you mean Republicans idolizing them but only in specific circumstances that support bigoted worldviews, then sure.

Regarding your source for the claim of Mao as a sex abuser, The Private Life of Chairman Mao by Li Zhisui, here’s what Wikipedia has to say:

Several people have questioned the authenticity of the book. Li’s memoirs were not based on original records or personal diaries. During the Cultural Revolution, he burnt all of his original diaries and, as such, the book was based on restructured memories which might be wrong or fallible as Li’s collaborator, Anne Thurston, admitted.[14] Historian Frederick Teiwes accused Li of being “anti-Mao”.[15] According to Tai Hung-chao, who was the translator of the book, Random House, the company which published the book, wanted to add more “juicy bits” to the book such as Mao’s sex life in order to attract a larger readership.[15] Li disagreed with this line of approach, but eventually gave in to it.[15] A statement protesting that many of the claims made in Li’s book were false was issued soon after its publication, signed by 150 people who had personally known or worked with Mao, including Wang Dongxing, Li Yinqiao and Ye Zilong.

The about this site section of factsanddetails.com is also especially concerning:

I am not professor or an expert on the subjects I write about but I have done a fair amount of reading about them. I try to use good sources (see below) and have been doing what I am doing—collecting and organizing information and facts— for some time and feel I have developed some skill at it. The text is written in factoid style generally using language found in travel guides, magazines and newspapers rather than academic journals. I don’t have footnotes and bibliographies but I often list sources at the end of the facts or under the first fact under each subheading. When a source is not listed the information: 1) can be taken to be a generally accepted fact (often seen in at least two different places); 2) has been arrived at through observation (direct or second hand through other sources) or by common sense; or 3) was taken from a newspaper or magazine article that didn’t attribute it.

In other words, hearsay is totally fine and allowable information.

When I started this project in the 1990s I used mostly print sources such as the New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Daily Yomiuri (a Japanese newspaper), The Times, National Geographic, Smithsonian magazine, The New Yorker, Time, Newsweek, U.S. News and World Report, The Guardian, Atlantic Monthly, Archeology magazine, Natural History magazine, news services used by these periodicals such Reuters, Associated Press and AFP, information from national tourist offices, tourist brochures I have picked up from places I have visited, Lonely Planet Guides, other travel guides, Compton’s Encyclopedia and various books and other publications.

In other words, near-exclusively western media, with no alternative perspectives whatsoever.

When I started this project I was living in the Washington D.C. area and called every embassy and national tourist office and asked them to send all the information they had—and started with that. Later, I collected the newspapers, magazines and books that I listed above and every few months spent an entire day cutting them up and putting them in piles based on country or topic and put the piles into boxes with previous piles, ending up with about half a room full of article-filled boxes. The piles of articles used so far for China and Japan alone, when added all together, would probably exceed three or four meters in height. It is a crazy system I know but is ultimately easier, more comprehensive and reliable than relying totally on Google searches.

In other words, the site maintained lived in the heart of the US, and found sources directly from the US state department.

As for Taiwan, their own self-described title is the Republic of China, who do not claim independence from the mainland but instead sovereignty as the self-percieved legitimate government of the mainland as well as Taiwan. Saying “Taiwan is not China” is actually against Taiwanese identity. The question isn’t whether or not Taiwan is Chinese, but whether the government in Taiwan or Beijing is the legitimate government of China.

As for Hong Kong, as of 2019 (the latest polling) only 17% want independence from the mainland. Hong Kong was already freed from British colonialism, and has now been returned to China as the era of colonialism has ended.

There’s no actual polling data concerning Tibet that I can find. However, prior to the intervention of the PLA, Tibet was a feudal slave society with rampant sex abuse.

The Tibetan serfs were something more than superstitious victims, blind to their own oppression. As we have seen, some ran away; others openly resisted, sometimes suffering dire consequences. In feudal Tibet, torture and mutilation — including eye gouging, the pulling out of tongues, hamstringing, and amputation — were favored punishments inflicted upon thieves, and runaway or resistant serfs. [22]

Journeying through Tibet in the 1960s, Stuart and Roma Gelder interviewed a former serf, Tsereh Wang Tuei, who had stolen two sheep belonging to a monastery. For this he had both his eyes gouged out and his hand mutilated beyond use. He explains that he no longer is a Buddhist: “When a holy lama told them to blind me I thought there was no good in religion.” [23] Since it was against Buddhist teachings to take human life, some offenders were severely lashed and then “left to God” in the freezing night to die. “The parallels between Tibet and medieval Europe are striking,” concludes Tom Grunfeld in his book on Tibet. [24]

In 1959, Anna Louise Strong visited an exhibition of torture equipment that had been used by the Tibetan overlords. There were handcuffs of all sizes, including small ones for children, and instruments for cutting off noses and ears, gouging out eyes, breaking off hands, and hamstringing legs. There were hot brands, whips, and special implements for disemboweling. The exhibition presented photographs and testimonies of victims who had been blinded or crippled or suffered amputations for thievery. There was the shepherd whose master owed him a reimbursement in yuan and wheat but refused to pay. So he took one of the master’s cows; for this he had his hands severed. Another herdsman, who opposed having his wife taken from him by his lord, had his hands broken off. There were pictures of Communist activists with noses and upper lips cut off, and a woman who was raped and then had her nose sliced away. [25]

I don’t like Wikipedia as a source, but it’s generally accepted as the standard for liberal academia. If a source criticizing communism or communist figures is disputed even among Wikipedia, then it isn’t a good source, most likely.

As for the bit on Tibet, I’m fully capable of admitting when I do not know something, unlike the person I replied to. However, I said the exact opposite of calling Tibetans “savages and pedophiles.” I called the feudal slavers as such, just like I would be comfortable calling the plantation owners of the south pedophiles and torturers. Dr. Michael Parenti painted the Tibetan serfs not as pedophiles and savages, but as people with their own agency in actively opposing their own torture:

The Tibetan serfs were something more than superstitious victims, blind to their own oppression. As we have seen, some ran away; others openly resisted, sometimes suffering dire consequences. In feudal Tibet, torture and mutilation — including eye gouging, the pulling out of tongues, hamstringing, and amputation — were favored punishments inflicted upon thieves, and runaway or resistant serfs.

As for the site I linked, it’s not the source. You can read the source on Duke University’s website, I just linked the site I did because I prefer to link text over PDFs. Dr. Michael Parenti isn’t some random person, but was a university professor and academic.

I have no idea why you attacked me with homophobia at the end, certainly you’re capable of insulting me without resorting to bigotry. Same with immediately dehumanizing me as cancer.

Tankies like to argue that comparing Xi Xiping to Winnie the Pooh is racist because Winnie the Pooh is that off orange-yellow colour, and it’s easy to pretend racism starts and ends at vague commentary about skin colour and not, you know, power structures and oppression.

The only nation perpetuating genocide here is Israel in Palestine, but even if historical context is different, what remains the same is the basis of the insult in racism!

Winne the pooh is racist now? Dude - the whole reason it became a meme is because someone made a cute comparison of how Xi looks like Pooh (which he objectively does) and the whiny little bitch threw a hissy fit and created his own personal Streisand effect. It has nothing to do with the Chinese people and everything to do with a thin-skinned dictator.

Remove your head from your ass before you speak. You’ll sound a lot smarter.

No, Xi does not “objectively look like Winnie the Pooh.” I understand that you may not have intended on being racist from the outset, but do you really need to be explained why depicting a Chinese man as a yellow cartoon is racist?

                  Sure he doesn’t…

By your logic, the Simpsons are racist against Chinese because they have yellow skin. Again, you keep talking, but all that comes out is incoherent bullshit.

To play devil’s advocate, the meaning of “dictatorship” in “dictatorship of the proletariat” is different from the modern/conventional meaning of that word. Mao conceived of himself as leading a democracy, as ridiculous as that sounds.

If it’s a state dictatorship it’s always the same. Regardless of how you fantasize about it. It’s still disconnected unaccountable leadership at the top. And if you disagree, there are no democratic solutions for an enemy of the state.

Okay so here’s your mini-lecture on Marxist theory: Basically Marx didn’t believe in universal democracy (as in rule by all) within class society; since to him class conflict lie at the core of society any society with a class must have a ruling class that dominates other classes. Long story short under capitalism this dynamic expresses itself in the bourgeoisie (rich capital owners), who as the ruling class use their control of capital to dominate the proletariat (those who can only live by selling their labor, the working class). To express this dynamic he calls the class system of a society under capitalism the dictatorship of the bourgeoisie, irrespective of whether or not the society is governed as a liberal democracy, which can be readily confirmed by glancing around oneself. Therefore, in Marxist theory when the proletariat overthrow the dictatorship of the bourgeoisie they’ll assume power, and it’s that dynamic he calls the dictatorship of the proletariat (this is then supposed to wither away as class society transforms into classless communism). Given that the proletariat are the vast majority of the population, anything resembling true democracy in class society is going to be a dictatorship of the proletariat (though a dictatorship of the proletariat doesn’t have to be democratic), because of course effective rule by the 0.1% isn’t very democratic.

TL;DR: “Dictatorship of the proletariat” is Marxist terminology for “a society in which the working class runs things,” and doesn’t assume or preclude democracy.

That sure was a way to say a lot of things without saying anything addressing what was said.

I know Marx’s philosophy. Just because Marx theorized something does not make it so. And there are plenty of marxists that reject the dictatorship of the proletariat or the high level vanuardism of Lenin. If your primary response to criticism of the dictatorship of the proletariat within a massive state. Is simply to recite dogma, you have nothing of value to say

The insulting part is where he says (paraphrased) “I don’t like this meme because Mao killed a whole bunch of people and I didn’t (I think).”

Their censorship isn’t working anymore. The walls are breaking down, people are using VPNs, and Chinese people are talking to us on western social media sites. They can still believe it’s all western propaganda lies, but they can’t hide from the truth anymore.

What are you talking about? They don’t make it a criminal offense to broadcast anyone insulting America. In fact they have people whose job is to go on TV and make jokes about how stupid America is. They have entire networks dedicated to talking about how much they hate the current administration. Insulting America is like an American national pasttime.

Compare that to China where every news network messaging is enforced by the state, and saying anything else is illegal.

Like with Obama’s joke about Trump this week saying that the White House renovations made the building look like “Saddam Hussein opened a Cheesecake Factory”.

The GOP flipped out about the cheesecake factory part, but not about the comparison to Saddam.

For those not in the know, Trump’s style of decorating has a name that existed long before 2016, it’s called “dictator chic” and it is the same decorating style Saddam, Qaddafi, other dictators and drug lords embrace.

The GOP flipped out about the cheesecake factory part, but not about the comparison to Saddam.

A strategic decision to twist this into insulting middle class white people, rather than comparing Trump to a historic National Enemy.

It flopped, in large part because Republicans have fully forgotten how to meme. But it’s the standard conservative racism jujitsu.
