So the European Comission will not act on the Stop Destroying Videogames initiative, because it wants to focus on deregulation, because apparently current regulations are too much of a burden on businesses (source needed).

And the same European Comission is perfectly fine implementing new regulations for the purposes of… ruining everything for everybody and establishing close to the most totalitarian regime in existence right now?

See, there’s always space for new regulation, as long as it benefits the oligarchs, and nobody else but the oligarchs!

This law will literally end indie game studios in the EU. Or at least prevent them from selling in the continent they are based in.

Oh and it is not only games. Has anyone a idea how to implement age verification for the fediverse? So have fun here as long as it lasts, because it will all burn under this law!

I really wish we would move to some more resilient protocol, where the roles and responsibilities are more distributed, and identities fully portable.

and what would that change in regards of that law? It would still need a way to implement age verification and I really don’t see a way for an open, federated, distributed system like the fediverse to implement it. It is in its core principles incompatible with age verification. I can’t see a way for the fediverse to survive this law, not in the EU at least.

Not really. Take nostr as an example. You probably wouldn’t even notice if one or more of your relays went down due to legal, or any other problem. The move to a non compliant or offshore relay is just a single click away. No registrations, no new usernames, no new social graph.

It’s not about becoming compliant, it’s about becoming ungovernable.

It’s the EU Commission under Von Der Leyen. The European People’s Party got 13 seats out of 27 in the Commission. It’s the Christian democrat /conservative /center right liberal party of the EU. No wonder they are for this law.

The EU Parliament has people in it that are actually fighting for us.

Its true for all countries. Politicians only care about themselves and their shareholder friends. They only use the ordinary people as a means to gain more power and control even in democratic countries.

tis the exact issue: ordinary people let themselves be represented at all. take your arms, show them who is actually in control.

If that vermin Metsola is still in charge while this gets voted, not even the Parliament will be able to stop it, as she clearly shows she’s more than willing to bypass the Parliament’s decision with chat control 1.0

Online ID should only be legally mandated in cases where KYC (know your customer) laws exist, like financial services.

If you want to protect children, make them use devices that are locked down and block adult content. Online service providers should at most be required to mark such content with metadata.

KYC laws should be mandatory for any service that allows you to type the terrorist codeword characters “Palestine” into a text box especially where someone under the age of 500,000$ stock portfolio can see it

There’s a popular misconception that lobbying doesn’t exist in the European Union. It does. Big money is constantly trying to sway and buy politicians into their interests, everywhere, and their interest are always right leaning social control. There’s also a right wave going on in the world. The EU is leaning right, and with it there’s a raise in popularity of dumb backwards legislation.

Also the EU Commission are not elected, they’re nominated.

The only part the EU Parliament has in there is a confirmation (take it or leave it) vote on commissioners other than the head.

It’s a perfect setup for moneyed interests to buy themselves whatever laws they want for an entire block of nations with 470 million people and which has a Gross Domestic Product close to the US.

So most of the EU crap comes from the EU Commission (though recently the EU Parliament itself renewed Chat Control when its head used a procedural trick to do it at a time when many parliamentaries were already on vacations and without needing a majority of parliamentarians to approve it, so shenanigans are an EU Commission monopoly).

The EU is leaning right, and the US is leaning right, so…would the EU be willing to become the 51st state?

How’s that legal? That’s literally bribery.

I don’t think it’s the right. I’ve seen so many center left politicians support these draconian laws.

Good god, a lot of thirdworld countries are better at this.

It’s the same people making or not both the Laws helping specific really wealthy companies who are known to provide gold-plated “opportunities” to friendly retired politicians and the Laws that would stop such obvious conflicts of interest, so of course they don’t make the latter and thus it’s perfectly legal to, after favoring certain companies and industries as a politician, retire from politics and go get paid a couple million a year from some company that the laws you made and measures you enacted helped.

This is why Democracy is supposed to have 3 independent pillars - Politics, the Press and the Judiciary - which watch over and keep each other in check: if the Political branch allows most forms of what in practice is corruption to be legal, the Press is suppose to hammer them for it.

Sadly, the Press is a lot less independent nowadays, ever since the same people who own the companies that benefit from “friendly” politician lawmaking bought most of the Press, plus specifically for the EU, its politics naturally get way less coverage than national politics in all EU countries (plus EU structures like the EU Commission are far more opaque), so naturally under such reduced visibility and understanding the crooks that manage to get themselves into lawmaking and executive positions in the EU get away with far more funny business than they would otherwise.

My own feeling is that if measured in terms of the amount of negative impact on EU nations and citizens, what people would consider to be corruption (so, all situations where politicians benefit certain economic interest in the expectation that they themselves will personally financially gain from having done so, even if they’re actually legal), the EU structures are probably the most corrupt political structure in Europe, not because of having more corrupt people in it that elsewhere but because the measures enacted there have the most impact of all hence in that process benefiting certain interests by adding costs or limiting freedoms of others causes much more damage that it would if it was done at a local or even national level - a single corrupt EU Commissioner can cause far more damage than a single corrupt government minister in an EU nation.
