Sodas and energy drinks actually aren’t vegan. Something about animal gelatin being used in production?
Well, they use gum Arabic. But energy drinks have taurine.
which is all vegan
Taurine comes from animal tissue.
Doesn’t monster energy contain taurine?
They use a synthetic taurine, but yes they do.
Yes but don’t be fooled by the name: Taurine is called like that only because it was first discovered in bulls but it’s present and produced by many other animals and micro organism; as much as i know most of the taurine is today produced either by synthesis or by harvesting what some micro organisms produce
If you live in a first world country, living vegan is honestly not a problem at all. And of course I’m not counting the US here. These guys are just poor people that are challanged enough already.
I think I would have a tough time with going full vegan. Vegetarian sounds like I could do it easily. I enjoy a lot of vegetarian dishes regularily and will often prefer vegetarian options over meat based dishes.
So do vegan plus. Vegan plus bacon. Vegan plus cheese.
Don’t let perfect become the enemy of progress.
My progress is to introduce more vegan meals, not to cut out meat fully. Lacto-ovo flexi pescatarian, or something like that.
Can always start there then keep going. I will say a lot of people who ultimately go vegan also thought they never could do it. There’s some communities on lemmy with some good recipes if you want inspiration
Thanks! I appreciate the links, and I will definitely refer to some of those recepies
Of all the places in the world I’ve been, eating vegan in the US was the easiest by far.
Edit: except India. I should have specified western world.
Considering German cuisine, I find it very easy to do at the least in most big cities.
It’s actually cheaper in the US, to note. The lowest income groups in the US are the one exactly the most likely to be vegan or plant-based
That’s a polite way to say living on rice and beans is a healthy choice.
I mean, your country can be rich but it does not mean it’s easy being vegan and even if it is, there is still an economic impact on going vegan that poorer people cannot afford
The lowest income groups are actually the most likely to be vegan and eat the least meat, dairy, etc. around the world. The lowest income countries eat the least animal products
That’s true but not in all places
Being vegan is much cheaper
In your country.
Even with subsidies, it’s still cheaper if you compare to whole-plant based diets and real world spending data. It’s only the pre-made plant-based meats and similar that are more expensive because they don’t yet have the same economies of scale
Seems like you are from Italy based on your instance? Studies have found overall costs lower in Italy for plant-based diets
https://www.ox.ac.uk/news/2021-11-11-sustainable-eating-cheaper-and-healthier-oxford-study
Yeah in Italy overall the price of meat is higher than plants but where i live, if i compare the quantity of meat and plants needed for a full meal, they are almost at the same prices especially where i live since we have plenty of meat to export anyway, the point was not about me but about others, i could prolly be vegetarian with little problems (not vegan, i could not) but I am not very healty so i’d rather not gamble with what i eat too
In a just world it is, but it kinda depends. A lot of countries subsidise dairy products into the ground for example, which can make it cheaper to be vegan except for dairy. This is of course still better than not vegan at all
Even with subsidies, it’s still cheaper if you compare to whole-plant based diets and real world spending data. It’s only the pre-made plant-based meats and similar that are more expensive because they don’t yet have the same economies of scale
It found that in high-income countries:
• Vegan diets were the most affordable and reduced food costs by up to one third.
• Vegetarian diets were a close second.
• Flexitarian diets with low amounts of meat and dairy reduced costs by 14%.
• By contrast, pescatarian diets increased costs by up to 2%.

Compared to meat eaters, results show that “true” vegetarians do indeed report lower food expenditures
https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0921800915301488?via=ihub (looking at the US)
Based on primary data (n = 1040) collected through an online survey, representative of the Portuguese population, through logistic regressions, it was possible to conclude that plant-based consumers, particularly vegan, are associated with lower food expenditures compared to omnivorous consumers. In fact, plant-based consumers are shown to spend less than all other consumers assessed

I mean, germany does subsidize dairy products and the store-brand oat milk is still cheaper. Is it more heavily subsidized where you live?

I love the whole “this vegan shit is easy” meme format
Bacon wrapped white monster is the shit.
Pretty clear that’s white monster wrapped 🥓
I’m seeing influencers advertise these everywhere. Are these actually good?
I don’t get the appeal. It tastes like energy drink flavour.
With so many funny and interesting flavours monster and most other energy drinks have, choosing the basic energy flavour is just bland.
White Monster? Pretty good. Better than Red Bull for sure. But the best Monster for me is the ice tea flavored one.
White Monster (pictured) tastes like… orange pop that’s less sweet, much more citrus and has something else going on akin to saltiness at the same time; maybe it’s an umami-flavour. It is genuinely delicious. I have now tried the rest of the Monster line-up and despised them, they are all fit for the pit. I haven’t tried any other energy drink.
Good? No. Fine if you want to not sleep for a concerning amount of time, and better than coke zero because it’s got more caffeine per caffeine.
I prefer the pink cans. But they’re okay for an energy drink.
Best, flavor of battery acid
yeah i miss surge too
If you want heart palpitations.
Compared to the amount of coffee a lot of people drink, these aren’t that bad. There’s no sugar at least.
A standard run of the mill large coffee has more caffeine than one of these, and people guzzle those down.
It also has taurine
If you enjoy what’s essentially lightly carbonated and highly caffienated sugar water, then they’re pretty good.
Hey, these are the sugarfree ones
White Monster is highly caffeinated artificial sweetener water, it’s sugar-free.
