Silica is a mineral. aka Quartz and it will melt. Stone jugs are made from clay and is vitrified not melted. its fired in a kiln like brick.
Well, “vitrified” literally means made glassy, and the process involves melting the silicates in the clay, so there are some similarities.
Only in process and loosely at that. Vitrified clay or brick if you prefer is much harder than silica glass.

The jugs were not that small and the loop was much bigger. I had my first drink of alcohol out of a stone jug. It was moonshine and the jug had originally been a maple syrup jug.
Also, that cap always makes a sticky mess.

If you consider liquor bottles, you will have to admit that the looks of the bottle must be a big part of the marketing and appeal. A lot of people in that business obviously consider it important that their bottles are distinctive.
And maybe it’s at least a little bit that way for syrup, too. If you’re asking people to pony up extra money for real maple syrup, maybe it makes sense to distinguish the bottle with extra cozy-homey-old-timey signifiers.
All that said, the brands of maple syrup I’ve been buying don’t have a vestigial jug handles. Many of them don’t.
Most of the maple syrup I see comes in 540ml cans. The bottles are almost always more expensive. Custom glass packaging in relatively small quantities is much more expensive than mass-produced standardized cans.
