Could this post be titled a bit better?
If not bot accounts, then probably old users making new accounts due to being auto-permabanned and not being able to get anywhere with the shitty AI support to restore it, and they aren’t subtracting banned accounts from the total user count.
Doesn’t say anything about bots, so I’d bet that’s a good part of it.
They were running bots in all sorts of places when I left like 3-4 years ago, and it’s only gotten worse. Plus, what easier way to drive up EnGaGeMenT with all of your UsErS than to constantly add more and more fake users to keep the handful of morons who stay around entertained.
Reddit user is growing because reddit user is eating
I can only compare to Lemmy so:
-
There is way more content
-
The people are way nicer
-
There is way more topics covered
-
There is way less activism
-
You get a broader spectrum of opinions, not just Left wing Memes/Linux/Activism/American Politics
-
Did I mention people are nicer? My gosh it’s so much better
Sounds like you want to leave Lemmy and go to reddit
Have you looked at Lemmy’s popularity? like 99% of people left and went back to reddit
I haven’t noticed a problem. Still plenty of content and people. Good discussions.
If all those people left, and the quality hasn’t dropped, good riddance.
if all you need is shit memes and lemmy shitpost then yeah, i guess you’re all set
some of us aren’t american and prefer things outside of politics
I strongly suspect you’d have a better time here if you didn’t complain about Lemmy every other comment or come into a discussion being blatantly wrong accusing “The Lemmy” of deciding a movie is a satire of facism (you know, something it’s director stated years ago) or griping about muslims every other comment. Also weird percentage to claim given you were shown the figures of Lemmy MAU recently.

oh this is for me not for you
or come into a discussion being blatantly wrong accusing “The Lemmy” of deciding a movie is a satire of facism (you know, something it’s director stated years ago)
my god who cares
or griping about muslims every other comment.
lmao i have 4000 comments of which maybe 100 are about islam, but sorry i triggered you
you know how i know how much this place sucks and only has 10 users?
because only on lemmy do i get people following me around giving me advice on how to enjoy lemmy “properly”, on every other forum people just enjoy themselves
good night, sleep tight, don’t bother replying thanks
my god who cares
I mean you cared enough to go on a paragraph long screed about it, went into negatives and now are here complaining about Lemmy not being nice to you?
triggered
don’t bother replying thanks
Alright so you’re an arsehole who complains when everyone treat them like the arsehole they are, ok. I would say it’s ironic the guy constantly complaining Lemmy is mean to him calling people triggered, but whatever helps you deal with all I guess.
k
You forgot star trek and autism

They recently started requiring logins, especially for old.reddit
So the user base is not actually growing. The people who were reading old.reddit without an account had to sign up now. But that was a one-time bump in registered accounts. It does not necessarily mean that the user base is increasing.
And that is the only reason the userbase is rising, and the user base rising is the only reason they started requiring accounts to view the site.
Numbers must go up.
Don’t they always?
No, it used to be possible to browse the site without an account.
The general population doesn’t care about freedom or censorship, they just want entertainment. Also a significant part of those “users” are bots.
I’m seeing them here also, unfortunately.
How is that a bad thing
Did you actually just ask how having a platform full of bots and the population being indifferent to freedom and censorships is a bad thing?
You give away the troll game too easy of that’s the case
