    She’s just baffled that anyone who knows those two distributions could be so dense as to whittle down the vast infinite sea of possible options to just two incredibly boring ones. She would have cried next if he hadn’t done it.

      well the vast majority of those are just arch and debian with extra steps, with the occasional fedora based or independent distro

      Yep. Should be “Windows or Linux?”

      I know part of the joke is that it’s not this comparison--that asking “arch or debian” also rules out Windows--but it really is the important dividing line.

            That’s actually what I’ve seen a lot! After a few years of tinkering with your system, the idea of something stable and polished is very appealing, so you can focus on getting things done.

              I run Arch on my personal machine and Debian on my server and honestly Debian gives me more issues.

              It doesn’t like zfs and Nvidia drivers are always a fight. Debian is still good though if all you want to run is a web server forever.

      God that was a glorious OS.

      I was in sales around the time in between 2.1 and 4. Win 3 was the current and you could hardly multitask anything that wasn’t idle.

      I found out you could open a music video 9 times and tile it and it just worked (a little slow)

      I was all wtf are we even selling Windows, this is amazing.

      Then win95 hit, and it could do the same time.

      Microsoft had us put out a table with win95, I ran that exact demo with the Edie Brickell video from the install CD and copies flew off the floor.

      Funny thing, not like a single person there would ever do that, but that’s all they needed to see

          • Yggdrasil Linux/GNU/X, a commercial distribution (alpha: 8 December 1992)

          • The two oldest, still active distribution projects started in 1993. The SLS distribution was not well maintained, so in July 1993 a new SLS-based distribution, Slackware, was released by Patrick Volkerding.[23] Also dissatisfied with SLS, Ian Murdock set to create a free distribution by founding Debian in August 1993, with first public BETA released in January 1994 and first stable version in June 1996.[24][25]

          I think that there are two possible takeaways from this:

          • Not clear what distro was used — if any — but if it was, it won’t have been a presently existing one. It’s possible that he was just rolling his own setup, not using a distro at all.

          • Linus’s date with Tove derived from an email exchange. What ninja chicks look for in a guy is possibly an email client, not a Linux distribution at all. It sounds like Linus was probably using Pine at the time (though someone could go dig up mail headers from old emails to check).
