It’s almost like having basic appliances connected to the internet is a bad idea. Outbound sensor data? Yeah, ok, maybe. But inbound commands?

Doors that exit can also be used as an entrance.

Not if there’s no control hardware for it to be connected too, a telemetry sensor in no way needs the ability to even influence the mechanical function of the device.

But then how will we get security updates?

You keep a hammer next to the electronics. If they act up, they get smashed. That’s all the security needed.

I suspect these controllers were mostly being used for telemetry (getting notified if they lose power), not remote control. But they were still vulnerable to zero-days if not updated. Kind of the same story as all the other IoT stuff that has turned out to be vulnerable.

Toto Japanese company, the electronic components — circuit boards, sensors, heating elements, control panels, nozzles — are primarily manufactured in Thailand and Malaysia, with some also in China.

Sanitronics International B.V. is from Netherlands, but everything electronic is made in china.

I think it’s a funny warning by a good guy. The message is “get your shit together now before an all-out war”.
