The unofficial Minecraft Pocket Edition Launcher you seem to have alluded to in your edit is pretty nice, and feels almost as if it’s a native port of Bedrock to Linux. All the Google and Android stuff is abstracted away.
Minecraft already has too much big tech influence on it with Microsoft, let’s not add Valve’s grubby fingers into the pie now, shall we?
Games not on Valve’s platform and are hosted elsewhere is a good thing! So that way if Steam even collapses for whatever reason…Not all games are lost! Not every game needs to be on Steam.
Honestly, I don’t see the point of adding Minecraft to Steam. As it already exists on so many platforms; I don’t see Microsoft or Mojang being interested in sharing a revenue cut with Valve for every sale. As they mainly distribute Minecraft from their website and support several computer OS, they have the most to gain from following KISS in this instance.
Idk, I visited my niece and nephew who love Minecraft. I came with my Steam Deck, and the recommended way to run Minecraft was through some 3rd party launcher that wasn’t officially Minecraft. It worked fine, but I kinda would have preferred an “official” pathway to running it there.
That can be fixed by pressuring Mojang to implement those changes. It doesn’t have to be on Steam to recieve those upgrades, community action and pressure are necessary to manifest those outcomes. Its less of a pipe dream than wishing for the impossible.
If releasing on Steam and let Proton do the work of running on linux is much more impossible than to ask them to write the program again but this time for linux, i’m not sure what to say.
Its not even a rewrite that is required, Java Minecraft already runs fine on Linux, C# programs can as well…The issue is it would Mojang needs a reason to adapt the Bedrock version of Minecraft so that it will run with no issues on Linux. To add a cloud save functionality to the game there, if you want that, advocate for the change. Don’t ask for them to add Minecraft to Steam, be sensible about it.
Huh? What’s so insensible about that? If Minecraft Dungeon 1 and 2 can be release on Steam, i’m not sure what so insensible to ask for a bedrock edition to be release on Steam as well. Certainly not as insensible as to ask them to add a team just to make sure the native linux version run well.
God damnit! How am I going to play RuneScape now that it’s on steam! It’s on steam so it can’t possibly be available anywhere else!(I’m just taking the piss. I agree with where you’re coming from)
Some launchers allow you to play fully offline, but only after you’ve authenticated and started the game at least once with a real Microsoft account. The launcher has a sophisticated validation mechanism to ensure this: a single boolean value stored in a JSON file. Set that to true and you’re good to go.
I think Prism launcher actually disabled this in the newer versions? Please correct me if I’m wrong because I really don’t wanna give microsoft any more money
And yet the Microsoft account migration which can be easily defeated by a JSON file according to you has attracted a class action lawsuit. Curious. Almost as if circumventing it is not my point.
Minecraft in Steam would be a downgrade in every way (Minecraft already has no DRM, lets you freely download and play old versions, doesn’t require the official launcher to start, is easily modded, and so on).
Implementing any kind of DRM is the game developer’s prerogative.
Yes, sure, but Steam encourages the use of the DRM included in the Steamworks API.
If Minecraft could only be downloaded through Steam, that would also be a step back insofar that right now, Mojang will let you download the game without any authentication at all. Changing this would be quite inconvenient for mod developers.
Allowing other versions is possible, again, at the developer’s convenience.
How? With branches / betas? There are a limit to those, and I’m pretty sure Minecraft exceeds them already. And as you already mentioned, you couldn’t use multiple versions at the same time. The only alternative (that I know of), the download_depot method, is far from user-friendly.
No other launcher needed besides Steam (and Steam is very far from being only a launcher)
That would reduce the number of launchers required from 1 to… 1. 🙃
Steam Workshop
The workshop is integrated into Steam and can only be used there (can’t download the files manually, as far as I know). It’s also way too simple for the modding needs Minecraft has (with its multiple versions, dependencies or breakage between mods, modpacks…).
It would also require Mojang to write their own mod loader, which would likely be too limiting for most mod developers. (And Forge is not the only mod loader out there. There are far better ones, like Fabric.)
There’s just no point to doing this. You’d replace a system that works very well with one that doesn’t. Steam generally works pretty well for managing games, but I don’t believe there would be any improvement if Mojang were to switch to it for Minecraft.
Would be nice to get Minecraft in Steam too

Bedrock on Linux. Java edition doesn’t have raytracing.
Edit: also cloudsave.

Microsoft account DRM isn’t enough for you?
Ah yes, the famous DRM.

I don’t see how Steam would make any difference.
The only downside I can see is that Steam doesn’t have a way to maintain multiple instances of the same game.
The Steam Workshop wouldn’t help with the Forge problem, just for the record.
I am assuming they mean CurseForge, which yeah, I don’t like CurseForge either.

They could still do all that on steam.
Why not just add it as a non Steam game? Or do you mean for like multiplayer stuff with Steam friends? Either way it should work.
Prism launcher. S-tier Mc launcher
