If one is this ignorant and addicted to the damn thing, plug it while you take a shower. The phone will be happy.

I never knew there were this many people who bring phones in the shower. Where is this world going… People chase dopamine even while showering

There is two people in this thread

    1. people who read “bringing your phone in to the shower” as having the phone in the same room as the shower.

    2. everyone else who seems to think that people are putting their phones directly under the shower nozzle.

Have the same phone for 6 years now, bring it into the shower most days, and have not had any issues.

Maybe steam has a non-zero effect but it’s pretty damn close to zero…

How long do you spend in the shower? Do you have time to turn off your brain for 5–10 minutes? I recommend it from time to time. Sometimes I even drive to work, or especially from work, without any audio on. It’s surprisingly relaxing.

But maybe I’m talking to one of the generations who grew up with mobile phones. I imagine it’s harder for them, poor things.

I mean, I just set my phone just outside the shower and turn the volume up a touch. Once upon a time I had a weatherproof bag I’d seal my phone in that was originally meant for a solar powered flashlight for emergency use. The bag was triple sealed and I doubt any steam reached the phone.

A whole lot of judgy comments throughout this thread. I’ve been bringing my phone into the shower for the past 15 years, and quit bagging them since all the flagship handsets were IP67 rated or stronger.

I accept the liability of it, and it has not been a problem for me by and large, and I have no regrets.

I would estimate as much as 5% or 8% of my phone use has been standing there and an enjoyably hot shower and listening to podcasts or puzzling through some idea (building an estimated moving cost to relocate to another market for example, and all its tax implications) or catching up on all the personal correspondence that I had ignored for the day.

If that makes me a monster, at least I’ll be an specially clean one.

Hot water is pretty expensive. Even if you are not worried about the phone, you may want to consider the impact on the environment (and your finances).

As other have said, not a monster problem.

But I would question my relation to my work if I can’t stop it even while taking a shower. We’re not built to be working every seconds we’re awake.

Now, you’re a grown ass adult so you do you boo. But maybe try to take a step back, just to check if you can. Work can be an addiction too.

lol not a monster, but maybe clean yourself up for 5–10 minutes, then sit down in your couch or in a chair and do the things you mentioned, instead of standing in the shower.

Treat your brain to a relaxing time of cleaning yourself. We need that time off of everything that the human brain didn’t evolve for, but we’ve been cleaning ourselves forever.

If you have time to do all that in the shower, you have time to do it out of the shower. You could hardly be saving time by doing it in the shower lol.

I’ve had this same phone since Covid, and bring it into the shower every day for podcasts, music, or YouTube videos.

Still works great! It might need charge in the evening after heavy use, but what 6 year old phone wouldn’t?

Just make sure they drink plenty of water first, urine is corrosive enough that it’ll break down the seals in an IP67 phone and claiming the warranty for that one was… tricky.

I used to have a perfectly working system with a waterproof bag-thing for the phone and a bluetooth speaker somewhere outside of the shower so I could watch youtube videos while just chilling in the shower.

Also had one of those long 1920s cigarette holders so I could smoke a joint in there. I made a good time out of it.

I am sorry, one song? 1, uno? That is crazy for me. I am all for quick showers but unless you are like a Pink Floyd fan I would be running like crazy to finish a shower in less than 5min, unless you don’t wash your hair every day which I do but I know for some types of hair people don’t.

Trying to race songs is how I got much better at having quick showers. I did pick long ones like Green Grass and High Tides or Through the Fire and Flames, and it took a while to be able to beat them.

First about a minute for the water to heat up and water rinse for the whole body. Short hair, but it’s like 30 seconds for shampoo, scrub, rinse, then another 30 seconds for face lather, scrub, and rinse. Then lather up a washcloth, scrub pits and groin, rinse, about 1 minute total. That still leaves two extra minutes for a 5 minute shower to shave your ass or whatever, and the two songs I listed are over 5 minutes (Over 9 for GGHT, over 7 for TFF).

If you want a 5 minute song, Muse - Uprising is 5:04. Though if you can follow the schedule I laid out above, you could shower to Toxicity and have 30 seconds of song or so after you get out of your shower.

I’ll give it a try for my next shower because it does sound a bit tight and I didn’t progress beyond being able to shower beyond being able to finish before TFF, but I think it’s doable.

Thank you for your detailed comment.

Unironically the part talking about song lengths and types of showers was really funny, now I keep thinking in characterizing things in terms of song lengths. It opens so many possibilities of how to express and do fun jokes. My wife and I already say stuff like “Are you going for number 1 or 2? … Let me use the bathroom first then I need to quick do X” But now the possibilities are endless, like “Are you going for a Blitzgreig Bop or a Stairway to Heaven?”

Anyway, back to the main topic, I remember doing something like that years ago, like timing the shower or using a playlist to gauge how long I am taking, but I guess nothing that detailed.

I feel like your breakdown maybe leaving some parts behind or take different time for me, like I scrub my ears and because of my piercings it takes a little more time. I also like to scrub between my toes and that is kinda fast but adds up. But I guess for me the true challenge is the same of comics someone else shared in this thread, really hard not to stop for a minute and take a deep breath, feel the hot water and just enjoy it for a while and gather my thoughts and energy, not to start the day for me, but to go to bed.

Anyway, much rumbling about nothing on my part, but I wanted to share, mostly to say I really enjoyed your comment and the time and effort you put into It. At least for me I usually dress leaving long comments because I am usually on mobile and hate typing on the phone.

Always wild concept to me. People bringing their $1000 electronics into an environment not made for them. Like come on, how long are you in the shower, do you really need to be entertained while washing your body?

I’ve noticed an increasing number of people that use their phone the entire time they’re at the urinal in public restrooms. This takes what? A minute tops? I’ve also seen people set it next to the sink to keep looking while washing their hands…assuming they even do to begin with.

Tech addiction is tough. When people don’t like their environment they try to escape it and unfortunately the black mirror is there waiting for them. It’s not productive but it provides comfort.

Back before smartphones, when everyone was bleaching the tattletale to get the phone warrantied after getting even a little water near it, there was a rumor going around. Kids with friends in Japan were hearing that people over there had waterproof cellphones and would be talking while in the shower. We were super jealous, not for shower talking, but for the feature. I’d think ICP rated phones today should be able to handle some humidity.

Notthst I’m cheating with other women (seriously who can be bothered) my phone is locked with my fingerprint. As much as we share a lot in life I have not given her copies of my fingerprints so she couldn’t unlock the phone anyway. In theory she knows the passcode but since she asks me for it every single time she needs to use my phone I’m recently confident she doesn’t retain it.
