speak for yourself. chatgpt helped me program a medium-complexity task yesterday within ~3 hours which would have taken me about 1-2 weeks otherwise, i fear. especially, it’s really convenient because when you just don’t know some technical term, you can just describe what you mean and it will give you the correct keyword, while googling for that kind of information is difficult since you don’t even know where to start.
It’s a push-pull kind of thing. They want to rope in all the people who can’t think of a sandwich, and because getting people to offload effort is a great way to capture customers long term, it’s a demonstration of how the want to mentally neuter the public.
Meanwhile I ask Gemini “Hey Gemini, can this Google product do X?”
It responds "Here is a list of features for Google’s Product:
… Does W! Does X! Does Y! …Me: clicks source for listed feature X… gets sent to post on Product’s support forum: “Can Product do X?” “No, it can’t do X.”

There was some AI ad where someone pointed their camera to their messy shelf and were like “Hey, how do I clean up my shelf?” and the AI was like “try rearranging the smaller items first” and about a billion people went “no shit”.
The best are when they have the sweet old grandmas asking it how to cook.
Yeah, sweet old grandmas already know how to cook, they don’t need AIs.
One day, I need to recreate a dish my late grandma did. Probably simple, but very nostalgic at personal level. I don’t think AIs are much help here.
They’re also targeting students with the ads, which tells me that it’s encouraging them to cheat.
I use uBlock Origin btw. I only see ads when my someone is watching TV or if I go to random websites in the Tor browser.

My girlfriends child is learning in school how to use chatgpt. They are heavily encouraged to use it to control their own text and whatever. She’s 8. She’s leqrning to use a tool ahe will never ever be allowed to in the future.
That is not good, especially at that age where the brain would be developing rapidly. This is the time where she really needs to use her brain to process information.
Today’s children would wonder how their grandparents lived without cellphone. Tomorrows children are going to think how we get anything done without AI.
I could live without a cellphone. But since AI got popular, it isn’t as easy to keep up at some subjects as it was before (since everybody at our highschool cheated with AI - at least I did most of the non-annoying stuff myself), which means I had to do more work.
Factually, using AI in your education means you get less value out of that education. In every math class ever, you’ve probably heard some version of,
“I don’t care that you got the right answer. I already know that 2x^2 - 5x -3 factors into (2x + 1)(x - 3) and I already know that this information is freely available. What I care about is making sure that you can figure that out without anyone helping you.”
If you use AI to do a problem, you’re training your ability to do something that everyone else on the planet can do. If you force yourself to do it, you’re training your ability to actually think.
You actually WON’T have to do more work in the long run. Think of it as an investment. If you spend the time learning it now, properly, so that you actually understand it, then every test that your study for, for the rest of your life, will be easier, and you’ll get higher grades. Measurably.

One time I successfully used an AI to troubleshoot a sound driver problem in Linux. It was maybe a little faster than casting about on stack exchange. I had to prompt it like 30 times though because it kept being confidently wrong. I didn’t continue to use it.
Maybe there are people out there who need something to suggest “sandwich”. You buy water from the water company because you wouldn’t have water without them. I would be embarrassed to shop from a company that claims to sell “intelligence”
I used Claude terminal and it immediately identified that i had a service that constantly sent small packets to my headset and since all packets have to use the smallest ones it was crackling sometimes due to latency
Fized that and set the minimum to a reasonable amount

All the common AI tasks that by end-users and small businesses can be done better by local software rather than through compute on a hyperscale platform. The only reason to need big AI is for large-scale projects. They’re still selling compute at a huge loss, and their profits are dwarfed by their expenses.
(Some argue the expenses are due to the massive buildout, which is reaching a capability point of diminishing returns. But even the running expenses outweigh the profits, even with government contracts.)
You know, like controlling armies of killer drones, or processing mass surveillance data to find dissidents that are an actual threat. Or doing cyber-ops on a rival nation.
I think that is why the stock market is still investing in big AI, not because we want better slop, but because they want garrison large populations and wreck rival societies.
Only a fool would think AI data centers are to help Timmy with an essay, Gertrude decide on a gift for her grandkids or Cameron the moron write a professional response at work that doesn’t sound like it was written by 6th grader…
…it’s all about mass surveillance. Always has been.
