I suspect it’s entirely grift motivated. There’s obviously going to be a takedown so owner is likely going to earn what they can and then bail the second X’s lawyers send a cease and desist. I can’t see any honest or altruistic motivation to do this.
Kind of a missed opportunity to not do this with a Mastodon instance.
