No. Ostensibly they are for processing. Data storage is a solved. The amount of storage available today is massive, abundant, and low power. These data centers are to house the over 12GW of Nvidia chips that were sold and are currently sitting in warehouses doing nothing. They don’t want to accumulate your info, they already have it. They want to process it in real time along with everything else they’re storing and capturing using these Nvidia chips.

They store, index, and retrieve data. That can be for web sites, search engine queries, or increasingly AI queries. AI queries take a lot of computing power.
They’re just like any other data center, except bigger because that’s more efficient than building a bunch of smaller ones.
AI data centers have a lot of GPUs and specialty hardware that use a lot of power, but they’re still just big buildings with lots of computers in them. They just sort of sit there, with air conditioners running 24/7.
If they’re not the huge “hyper scale” type, you end up with a situation like in the article: Where they had to cram too many cooling units in too tight a tight space (to make up for the fact that the data center wasn’t built for its current workload).
One thought keeping me up at night is, if I were to destroy/damage a datacenter, and was found guilty, is there a way to not pay for the damages? Could I just get a life sentance instead of paying

For some of them, I think each rack costs like in the millions. A giant AI datacenter will have tonnes and tonnes of them. Do you think you could ever pay back even the tiniest fraction of 1 billion $?

It’d be preferable for their hardware to be redistributed to people who could use it for open source things, but I’ll accept burning down or killdozering.
Incidentally if you steal a bunch of super thick copper wiring from a data center construction site, strip it all down, and melt the copper into ingots, nobody asks questions about where you got the copper at the scrap place you sell it to. So make sure you don’t do things like that.
