Historically the western aligned factions in eastern europe are those that sided with the fascists in ww2. When the US and Europe interveined in Ukrainian politics in the early 2010’s that’s who was elevated and that’s who’s in charge now.

You have the order of events perfectly reversed. The Ukrainian coup government began ethnic cleansing of people in the east. This resulted in a separatist movement. It would be very, very weird to have a resistance movement before there was anything to resist. What you’re saying is the equivalent of “Hamas arose out of nowhere and started the war on October 7th.”
