The problem as it exists started with Nixon and took root after he was ousted. True, but it very much accelerated under Reagan, in large part due to his personal charisma making it easier for him to convince people to go along with his bullshit.
In contrast, Bush the Elder had charisma roughly equivalent to that of present day Chuck Schumer so it’s very possible that he wouldn’t have been anywhere near as successful in destroying society.
