I’m specifically asking about the PvP part of the game.
This kind of game is my kid’s favorite; we frequently play Towerfall, Duck Game, Rounds, and Hyper Contender (from UFO50).
It’s so hard to find other games in this genre, because I don’t know the standardized name, if it even has one, so I figured I’d ask here. What do you call low TTK platformer PvP shooting games? Do you have a favorite?
Towerfall Ascension is a fantastic local multiplayer game! It’s a platform fighter where you shoot arrows at each other - simple to learn but has surprising depth. Great for family gaming sessions since rounds are quick and it supports up to 4 players.\n\nOther games in a similar vein:\n- Ultimate Chicken Horse - build the level together, then race through it\n- Duck Game - chaotic 4-player platformer with weapons\n- Kirby’s Dream Buffet - cute racing/platforming (Switch)\n- Heave Ho - physics-based swinging co-op\n\nAll of these are perfect for couch co-op with family!
If OP wanted an AI answer, they would have gone to chatGPT. Stop wasting water, electricity, and our time.
I think I would call it a platform arena fighting game. One similar game I don’t see mentioned is an arcade game called Killer Queen if there’s a cabinet in your area: https://www.killerqueenarcade.com/
Oh, nice! I’d seen those around but never looked too hard. We’ll definitely give it a go, thanks!
I used to be part of a YouTube channel that specialized in local multiplayer games, so I’m about to unload a healthy list on you.
I’ll start with Speed Runners. It might be if interest. Little different, but same local multi player competitive vibe. I’m stoked for the upcoming sequel.
See also (in no apparent order):
Samurai Gunn (1 and 2).
Nidhogg (1 and 2).
Roof Rage.
Lethal League {1 and 2).
Gang Beasts
Stick Fight; The Game.
Starwhal.
Sportsfriends
Stikbold!
Rockets Rockets Rockets
Super Blood Hockey
Porcunipine. All these games are super old, so they should be cheap and mostly available on other platforms than steam. Not all of them are a solid match for Towerfall, but they are all super fun to play from the same couch.
I was hoping someone would mention Samurai Gunn. Did you ever play 0space made by the same developer? I have very fond memories of crowding around my friend’s computer with a handful of USB remotes in college and fighting it out with each other.
I have not. But now I’m gonna.
Found a video on Technopants itch.io page:
Basically a no gravity samurai gunn with bombs. I think it’s a free/pay what you want sort of download.
Thanks, I do appreciate a super old game!
I’d go with Platform fighter. Kinda like smash bros or brawlhala
For me because its unique mechanics, fast paced pvp it falls into the same group/genre as Nidhog (1&2 both great games btw) and Liero (which now has a browser version for easier multiplayer)
I’m not sure what the genre is called but boomerang fu is pretty similar and fun.
Oh this does look fun. Thanks!
A single-screen, platformer, battler/brawler.
Similar one would be
Jump’n’Bump - Cute battle-royale, jump on oponents heads to be last bunny standing.
[Jump’n’Bump for download] (https://github.com/midzer/jumpnbump) (GPLv2)
Or a multi-screen battler:
Teeworlds - Grappling hook, platformer shooter. (zlib)
Duck Game fits the bill
It’s a platform fighter.
Couch competitive multiplayer? Because it’s not a fighting game, and I’d say it has more in common with Speedrunners than it does Smash Bros. And Samurai Gunn is a good one of those.
Excellent, this is exactly the kind of thing I was looking for. Thanks!
Not entirely sure on the genre name, but try checking out Stick Fight: The Game. It’s a similarly great time with fast rounds and lots of variety.
Thanks! I think it has the same developer as Rounds so I’ll definitely check it out.
The description of Towerfall says “archery brawler”. The others may not be archery specifically but “brawler” might get you somewhere.
