The pain and discomfort we feel from being confronted with reality can be depressing when we feel powerless to change it, but we aren’t powerless. We can change it. But to change it, we need to raise awareness of the issue, and we need to raise class consciousness. I’m sorry to hear that you want me to suffer, but I’ll take it for the opportunity to help others gain more class consciousness, because that is how we build a revolution.

It is more than likely that the vast majority of the people in the group shared the opinion of the activist. Well I think you’ll find that in addition to politics, most people like progress. They want society to become better over time. Better technology, better culture, better art, better governance. Most people are progressives, at least in theory. Now, most of them don’t act like they like progress, and they don’t act like they like politics either, but they do. And if you can avoid triggering any thought terminating cliches and speak to them logically in language they understand, they’ll tell you that they support socialism, environmentalism, queer rights, racial and gender equality, voting reform, and many other left wing policies. The trouble is just that they don’t want to put any thought or effort into how society is going to achieve that. But they like it in theory.
