I can’t say that particularly shocks me. I imagine that Chat GPT has probably swallowed dozens of Physics textbooks.

The bigger part of the problem is knowing where we are on the human knowledge novelty / training data available curve, or rather, when we need to get off of the ride.

Edit: Any chance your chosen AI has access to Wolfram Alpha as an MCP Tool? Because that would be very different, too.

If it’s successful at math, there’s likely much more than a learning model in play.

If the answer machine has been cleverly rigged (and weighted) to pass off math questions to more capable software, things can be great.

But a person who just hears that AI can do math now can have a very bad time if they go blindly use a brute force pleasant answer machine on a math problem. :(

For simple math that could work, and as long as the question is close enough to an exact match with plenty of published examples to copy.

A good rule of thumb is that the script it will come up with is about as likely to be correct as blindly taking the highest voted answer to the most similar question on Stack Overflow.

If the question is simple and common, the odds are quite good. If the question is nuanced or rare, the odds of a correct result drop off aggressively.

Edit: Your mileage may vary - providing an API to these LLMs that can do math correctly for them is pretty easy. Getting the LLM to consistently detect when to use that API is more challenging.

I mean, it’s a portable device. Put enough power into it, and it’s just going to light my lap on fire.

The more powerful device (with enough cooling, and a wall connection) is the Steam Machine, and it’s currently a lottery to get a chance to buy one. I am fully down to play more aggressive games, if I get a chance to buy the Steam Machine.

But I’m not excited for another Sega GameGear - another portable so powerful that it cannot be practically played away from a wall outlet.

I do want another SteamDeck, but I want it smaller, lighter, lower power, longer battery, and pocketable. I want a SteamDeck mini.

Now we play Cassette Beasts - and soon Palworld - together.

My boycott pretty naturally applied to my kids.

We were day one buyers for multiple copies of the last Zelda game, and the last couple Pokemon before Nintendo legal went foul.

Now no one in my family has a Switch 2, and my kids are begging me to help them spend their allowance on Palworld.

I bought a shit ton of games from Nintendo until their legal department went rabid.

Yes. I was a huge purchaser of both Steam games and Nintendo exclusives on Switch (as long as they got great reviews).

Then Nintendo’s legal team went crazy, attacking emulator developers and suing competing game studios over bullshit “patents” on game mechanics.

So it’s time to starve that beast. No more Nintendo games, for me.

Citizen’s United (and similar corruption) took away our ability to regulate tech billionaires, but we still out number them.

If they want to stop being scared, they can curb their parasitic behaviors and return the billions they have extracted.

Edit: Getting off of the list of the world’s billionaires is a path filled with fancy meals, accolades, ribbon cutting ceremonies, and thank-you letters from happier children.

Billionaires have a moral obligation to a cushy job (become non-billionares), and they aren’t doing it, today.

Microsoft has yet to explain how or why the lapse occurred.

Highly skilled technical staff are expensive, and it turns out that some people still use Windows when Microsoft doesn’t hire the talent necessary to keep Windows working.
