As a student, I feel this so hard. My school canceled every Master’s-level class section with less than 15 students and now I’m stuck in 3 16-week AI/ML-centric classes. I suppose I’ll at least be well prepared to sit through useless mandatory trainings once I enter the workforce, if I can find a job. I’d say I’m more than ready to graduate so I can be rid of this AI bullshit but I think I really just want to move somewhere remote and become a hermit.

The corporate mindset leaking into every aspect of society 🤮 Like, where are you supposed to specialize beyond large classes if not at goddamn masters level in uni?! Insanity.
I know right?? I actually feel cheated because I was promised something the school failed to offer to me. They had me write a review of the program this past semester and I was not particularly kind.
At least learning resources for my actual areas of interest are generally freely available to learn on my own time… and an MS looks good on a resume…
I’m actually considering work in the public sector at this point so I can have a work/life balance and actual benefits. Used to be the private sector had better long-term career prospects, but tbh I’d rather take the pay cut and escape the corporate dehumanization.
The FOSS community has been a great outlet for my actual interests because I can use what I know to help people instead of feeding into the technocratic slop machine. It’s also been helpful in finding areas where I’d enjoy specializing.

You’d think so, but they’re SO much more boring than that. I’ve now taken the “how to not write your password on a sticky note” training yearly since 2002.
I tell coworkers “They don’t make us take ladder training because they don’t think we can climb a ladder, they make us take ladder training so if we fall off a ladder, a lawyer can ask if we were following the ladder training.”
Don’t write your password down. Don’t use a password safe. Your password can’t have any words in it, it must be 16 characters with half of them non alphanumeric. And stop forgetting your passwords
Don’t forget the “stop forgetting your passwords” is accompanies by “password must be changed every 90 days” and “passwords cannot be similar to previously used passwords.”
I made myself a password generator where you input how long the password needs to be, + other requirements (length, number, special characters (there’s an input box for which ones are allowed) then it subtracts the number / special character from the total required length, chooses a random combo of 3-7 letter words that will make exactly the required length, then adds back in a random number and special character and capitalizes one of the words. Probably not as safe as a completely random password but waaay easier to remember. Would probably be way better even from someone who knows how to actually code because I know juuust enough to vibe code something small like this for personal use the only programming language I actually know is turtle so I understand the basic logic but not like. Syntax or anything.

That advice was actually relevant in 2002. Now it’s a more secure method.
