You can try all you like by being as educational and understanding as possible, but from what I’ve seen while doing that exact song and dance, is that people don’t care a lot of the time. Like, a scary amount of the time.
I still recommend at least trying, but don’t expect much out of people who can’t think about the next week, let alone the next month/year. :-/
Maybe talk about how you know asking for money sucks and how by budgeting and prioritizing he can not only never need to ask, he can find himself getting things that he wants more and not having to worry about running out of money for things he needs.
