  • Also, idk, I think that what an ape thinks looks good has little bearing on what avians find attractive. For all we know male ducks think that bright plumage is unattractive.

Like for real, would parrots looking at us understand what we see in permanent large breasts? Or would they look at our other comically oversized sex characteristic (large, exposed penises without a baculum) as the primary showy mating display. Or would they see us as a species where sexual selection has resulted in both parties having a display to show off? Would they think that from their perspective it’s obvious which looks better?

  • As a lesbian I’ve definitely seen plenty of gay interactions that are so gendered that I feel most people of the other gender wouldn’t be comfortable participating, especially conservative straight people. It’s really funny to me how this stereotype of gay people as less gender conforming (while it absolutely carries a lot of truth to it) results in people not even considering that sometimes gay sex is just two really masculine men going at it in a manly way or two women being extremely feminine together.

  • That’s totally fair, and I think that taxes should be included as part of the prize in non cash prizes (and cash equivalent should include the taxes as well to avoid the incentive to make it difficult not to take the cash or for people to not take it).

And yeah, windfall taxation is tough because it includes large financial inheritance (which left unchecked results in nobility, at least according to the founders of my country), lotteries (which I see no reason not to tax like any other income), sentimental inheritance of small goods (like grandma’s jewelry), sentimental inheritance of real estate (yeah that needs taxed, but the taxation system should work with you on it), non sentimental inheritance of real estate (which will be claimed to be sentimental), and large winnings/gifts that while very nice may become a burden when taxes are applied. And the lines between all these are blurry enough that some people will be cheating it

  • Yeah I should note I’m not civil so I’m not sure what safety factor they use. And also our 20% has a tendency to compound itself across estimations. It’s very similar to using four significant figures, where it’s a nice easy rule of thumb and you should know if you’re in a position where you can’t assume it. Safety being a situation where you always want to run it by a few other people for sanity checks.

I’ll also hazard a guess and say that a civil engineer would combine the dynamic load factor and the standard safety factor, because the standard safety factor is more for unknown variables and general fuckups like this one. Mind you that would leave you at building a rig for 30lb screens, so still not good.

And yeah we also have to deal a lot with cost-benefit analysis. While I’m sure buying more expensive motors isn’t cheap, y’all have the ability to say “this building can’t safely handle it”. Too much safety factor comes with increasing trade offs, especially in cost.
