I assumed this was common knowledge since like NT 4, but at least the knowledge is spreading
Was know that do track internet use like domain and vpn too?
You vastly underestimate how aware the average person is about Microsoft and their shittiness.
They’ve had kb articles for how to look it up since win7, so i don’t get the meme
It has gotten big publicity because microslop apparently helped the glowies to track down a criminal and they did that by tracking his movements through this device id, which made people aware of that.
Everyone with a functioning brain knew that microslop was doing this one way or the other for years, but having a case backed with facts probably made them more aware that this was still a thing.
I thought the same. I was confused when articles and posts about it started popping up. It’s been around for a Very Long Time.
Right, I’m not really sure how their product keys would work, without a “product lock”, for the key to fit into. That’s probably not a great metaphor, point being, of course they would always have needed and used something like this to lock your OS to your device using the product key, right?
This is a great video from one of the devs about the window product activation and how much they thought about how they’d determine how many changes to a system was a new device. Idk how windows works now, but it was fairly common back in the day to upgrade often, and you didn’t need a new Microsoft license most of the time when doing so.
