    My biggest gripe is:

    1. Save game
    2. (without ever resuming gameplay) Exit game
    3. “Are you sure? Any unsaved progress will be lost!”

I JUST SAVED! YOU KNOW I JUST SAVED! YOU KNOW THERE’S NO RISK OF PROGRESS LOSS!

In most of those cases there’s no “save and exit” option.

my favorite is when it says “unsaved progress will be lost” and then autosaves on quit anyway

Yep. Playing FF XV atm and whenever I select “return to title screen” I see the warning and always think that it could’ve been developed such if you save and then choose to exit to title that the game would simply do that, recognizing that no additional game play occurred between the last save and the input to return to title.

      Like, cmon, game. 🫩

Or when exiting, have the last save file time prompted as actual time and how long ago was the save made. That would be really helpful.

Some games do have this and it is definitely helpful when they do.

Edit: BioShock Infinite was the last game I played that did this.

I don’t even think all those check marks are really necessary. Just make it a “save and proceed/exit” type button and you’re good to go. save file sizes are tiny and it would just overwrite the last exit save that you can then load by pressing the “continue” button in the main menu. No back and forth or special tech necessary. If you want to load a different (manual or auto) save just select the “load game” option. That’s how all games should just do it.

If we don’t want to hard code any conditions, it’s as easy as saying:
“Last save was x seconds ago, any progress since will be lost”
Better UX, easier to add than any if saved in last 5 minutes then continue else…

Same thing with a game that has autosave.

I don’t care if it just autosaved. I’m going to manually save if possible. And if there’s no option for a manual save, that’s going to bother me and I’ll obsessively learn which actions always trigger an autosave and make sure to do one or to of those actions every time before quitting. (Often fast traveling or changing equipment will trigger an autosave.)

I don’t recall the names of the games, but I’ve played some that would not let you manually load auto saves. So even though the game was saved you could only load the last auto save by going back to last check point or from resume in the title screen. There have been times when I was stuck but the auto save or check point wouldn’t let me go back so I was forced to start the level/mission over.

Also auto saves on some games don’t upload to cloud back ups or transfer to other systems but in most cases a manual save can be saved to a physical drive.

Auto save is a nice cya feature but I need to be able to save it myself.

        Exactly.

A good game will have both autosaves and manual saves.

Autosaves are to protect you from losing too much progress if the game (or your computer) crashes or glitches out or something. Manual saves are for when you’re about to quit and want to save your progress. Both have their place, and (IMO) both are necessary.

No, manual saves are what you do right before murdering a whole village or blowing up something important so that you can undo it lol.

Maybe being in Early Access is why I behave differently with Subnautica 2. I manually save and then exit without saving because, illogically, “I remember exaCtlY wHAt I was dOing at the moment I manually saved, but who knows what the Save & Exit option will do to my saves list without my permission, or where it’ll drop me upon loading as compared to loading my manual save.”

And yet I affirm that every single time I go to load a save, there’s an identical non-manual save parked right above my actual manual save. Can’t tell if it’s an actual separate autosave or just a duplicated view of my manual save, though occasionally I notice two different time stamps (I assume from unsaved Exits I performed when drowning) and my brain says “AHAA! Not catching ME slacking” as I proudly load the manual save.

Just dumb fun brain arguments that only persist because I’m not hurting anyone (else).
