I know lemmy is gonna downvote for this because way too many people on here think piracy is justified. But I think if you pirate a new game, you’re an asshole. It’s one thing if you are downloading an old game for a system that’s no longer supported, or maybe it’s not even sold anymore. But if you try to justify stealing a new game because you have beef with it’s publisher, you’re shitty. That’s like saying if you were a low level employee at Amazon or Wal-mart, that it would be fair game if people stole from you just because of your job. So many people work on video games, it’s important not to see them as some faceless evil company. If you want new games to be made, they need to make money. And the people who work hard every day to create amazing games deserve your purchase.

“Society confronts the simple fact that when everyone can possess every intellectual work of beauty and utility—reaping all the human value of every increase of knowledge—at the same cost that any one person can possess them, it is no longer moral to exclude. If Rome possessed the power to feed everyone amply at no greater cost than that of Caesar’s own table, the people would sweep Caesar violently away if anyone were left to starve.”

You can’t steal a digital game and they don’t sell games. They sell a limited, revocable at any time license for you to play game.

Also, if you cannot sell this game you “bought” to me, you don’t own it.

Video game companies make heaps of money.

Sure you dont own it, you have a right to be angry.

But how does that justify you using something someone spend their time on?

I mean, you dont have to use it if you dont like it, but you do, they spend their time and give you terms to use their product. Thats it.

“You can’t steal a digital game” is borderline sovereign citizen talk. Artists operate within the structure of society. Just because the medium in which they deploy their art is digital and most distribution platforms feasible have licenses with unsavory terms, theft is not automatically justified.

That sort of logic could extend to the idea that it’s okay to squat in a particular ocupied house because the owner doesn’t own it, a bank does, and the money is imaginary, and the bank’s policies are unfair. There is something valid and authentic to the sentiment, but practically speaking, you’re still just being an asshole.

That is to say, extenuating circumstances may modify that. If you can’t afford a game, or if you really hate the developers, more people may agree with you. If you would freeze to death outside of the home, or, if the home’s current occupants occupy it unfairly, then perhaps people would be more empathetic.

But to declare that the wholesale theft of digital goods as fine just because you don’t like the platform is anarchy without any of the nuance of anarchy.

Games that are on GOG you do own. Same as a physical copy.

This game isn’t on GOG (yet) but its still in early access so only time will tell if it makes it or not.

My biggest gripe was not owning what I pay for as well but there are some players in the game that don’t support such practices consider supporting them.

Sure, those who can afford to pay for games should support the artists that made them. Those who can’t afford games should pirate them. We should all pirate in instances when paying would give our money to evil people, and we should all work towards a society where people can afford to make good art whether or not there’s profit to be had from it.

The market has become saturated with trash. I can’t trust a game to be worth $70 so I steal, especially “AAAA” games.

I pirate first. If I like it, I buy it. if I don’t like it, I don’t buy it. And above all… if it’s owned by a fucking transphobic pos, pedophile, thieving company like Disney, Israeli abomination, or JKR… I always pirate it even if I like the game, show, or book… because fuck them.
