Just dropped v1.4-beta of ONYX — an open-source, privacy-first messenger with E2E encryption for private chats and self-hostable groups/channels.
This release is mostly about media experience.
Voice Channels — but with a twist. If you’re self-hosting an ONYX server on your local network, you now get real-time voice inside your group. No cloud, no third-party servers.
Media Player — vinyl record animation when playing music, seek ±10 seconds, playback speed from 0.25x to 4x with presets, next/previous track, auto-repeat. Audio files now show their filename instead of a generic label.
Audio Settings — microphone and output device selection, so you can actually choose what hardware ONYX uses.
Why ONYX?

Would love feedback, especially from anyone running it on LAN setups.

Holy shit, I have to try this. Thank you so much!
This update actually wouldn’t have happened without your suggestion — you pushed me to finally implement it. Thank you!
Mumble does the same for voice chats
Mumble’s UX/UI is so arcane, my friends don’t want to use it.
I shudder to imagine what they’d think of a car with a clutch and a left-toe switch for the high-beams.
As someone who drives manuals - a what for the high-beams?
#2 ;)
Your friends are the reason why we can’t have nice things in gaming. Literally blinded by blingbling
Different people, different needs. Dismissing others is not the way of the FOSS, Luke.
