I am American. My glasses are like 30 bucks a pop and I order them on the internet. All I see an optician for is to get my prescription renewed every 5 years and that isn’t too expensive to get done either.
Where do you not have to pay for glasses? Here in the UK (which is not the US) children and low income people get free basic glasses, but any special coatings, tints, frames or adult glasses you have to pay for.
Is this a US joke I’m too encumbered by lack of freedoms to understand?

You do not have to pay for any optical, dental, or audiology equipment or treatment in France.
You can choose to buy fancy frames or tints, but you don’t have to.
