A Twitter post from Katie Dippold @katiedippold with the text “Tbt to Halloween when I dressed as the babadook but my friend’s house had more of a grown ups drinking wine vibe.” The attached picture shows her dressed up in black clothes with a white face and intense black eye makeup. She is surrounded by two people not dressed up and drinking wine.

To be fair, if you get invited to what is ostensibly a party on Halloween, then it’s expected that you should dress up unless it’s explicitly stated otherwise.

This dude was right and everyone else was wrong.

Also if you’re hosting a party just assume it’ll happen because people have multiple parties and/or going out to the club to get laid, they aren’t going to come drink wine and then go home and get into costume…

In the US, sure, not so much anywhere else. Halloween is not at all as big in most of the world as it is in the US, so if you want people to dress up it has to be explicitly stated on the invite.
