I definitely remember a lot of WPD from my Reddit years, and agree with what you say about shying away from death.
And having rejected the religion my parents tried to raise me in, agree with your point about it being an opiate people would rather take than accept reality (the quote is attributed to Marx, IIRC).
When my father asked me how I could believe that only nonexistence awaits after death, I told him a block of ice and a pot of boiling water left in the same room will eventually reach the same temperature. Humans must eat until we die. Meat left out eventually rots. All that lives is born to die. No being that has ever existed to its end has ever reversed its age or failed to permanently die.
Why, then, would you expect the entire universe you find yourself in to have a special cheat code to allow you to ignore all of its principles, just because a book, written by man, told you 1) there is, and that 2) this man-written book is incorruptible and can only ever speak the truth? You don’t find that to be the slightest bit strange?
