I remember the early days of the Internet when .jpg and .jpeg were different depending on browsers, .gif transparency was a wildcard, .png didn’t exist, and Real Player was the best thing for video.
tbh it’s because i am self hosting this stuff on a home nbn connection in australia and a lot of people in europe get very slow speeds to me just through sheer distance so i want to optimise the crap out of these images and videos i post
webp was working without issue and avif seems to work ok with piefed
going to stick with it and hope lemmy fixes the problem and i saw thunder was updated recently
reading up on it more it looks like image compression these days comes out of video compression codecs, so the standards are moving quite a bit faster now
OP why would you post an .avif image??
Some instances convert whatever you upload or link to avif. Like .zip does, for one
cuts bandwidth down a lot, even more than webp
