I feel compelled to share a gaming goof of my own:

Having come from Morrowind, I didn’t realize Oblivion had a fast travel system until WAY later in the game. I felt totally dumb for having missed that somehow.

On the plus side, my athletics level became alarmingly high.

I have a bit of a reputation among my friends for missing pretty basic stuff in games. My best guess is that I replay a lot of older games that I already know everything about, so it’s kind of a reflex to just ignore text that pops up on the screen. This is how I end up several hours into a game being unaware that there is a block mechanic.

Seconded. Oblivion even added horses to make terrestrial exploration faster, why not use them?

But an edge that Morrowind has over Oblivion (and Skyrim) is that it has so many more small settlements dotted around the map that act as travel nodes. Skyrim at least added cart travel between cities, but we’re talking less than 10 travel nodes compared to over twice that many in Morrowind (not even counting the Propylon network).
