Raspberry Pi is actively preventing enthusiasts from upgrading soldered memory to a larger configuration even when the replacement chip is technically compatible. The company says the restriction is intended to discourage unofficial high-capacity resales.
If someone modifies an asic by soldering a new ram chip on it, that’s grounds to null warranty, no? So their undue support claims is BS, ditto to the reputational damage (as if they aren’t doing that right now).
Or better yet, why don’t they modularize this component from the rest of the device?
