I propose a new timeline that starts in 2023. Pre 2023 is BC, before clankers, and post 2023 is AC, after clankers.

I just had that problem last night. There was a very funny meme post with a bunch of bald eagles. I linked it to Discord and then when to the comments. There were a fair few comments saying they couldn’t find any information on the incident the images were from, and that it was probably AI generated. I deleted the shared image after seeing those comments. I didn’t want to risk sharing potential AI when my friend group and I are against it.

If you’re so anti-AI pilled that you can’t enjoy comedy because you can’t purity check it for AI then you should probably touch grass.

I’d love to touch grass but the widespread expansion of data centers for AI is actively destroying the grass I should be touching.

no, it’s not. you’re being absurd.

data centers are mostly being built in areas you would never visit or go to. they are not being built on public park a few blocks from your home, which you never go to anyway.

I hate all the AI ‘enhancement’ of old cartoon memes. I don’t need Bugs Bunny to be unnaturally smooth, you’re killing the fucking art that went into painting those old animation cels!

Sometimes it can get hard to decide the line. Long before AI, image programs had various resize-upwards algorithms of varying effectiveness, and even many of the early “AI” ones were just using machine-learning processing.

For me the line is the cost of the AI tool: if it requires running on a datacenter and training with massive amounts of data obtained without consent of the creators, it is too costly for memes.

Other applications might have extra criteria, for example, I’ve seen nature enthusiasts point out that “enhancing” photos of animals might modify the photo enough that the animal loses its defining features

Ah, a true meme sommelier! As a shitpost epicurean we often don’t see eye to eye and this is one of those cases.

I find the smoothness to be an important feature for when I retire some day and work as a professional curator of low-effort-arts, as it will allow me to date the meme. It’s much easier than compression dating, which gives a rough estimate of reposts-over-time.

It doesn’t to anybody who actually enjoys comedy.

Imagine being so social media brained that you can’t laugh at a meme without purity checking yourself.

It matters as much as how many child workers made our phones, or how many rivers were polluted so we can have cheap plastics.

In theory, yes. In practicality, probably not, unfortunately.

Let’s say I gamed for 6 hours using my GPU at 100%, and then generated some meme using the same GPU for half a minute.

Can you elaborate on how is that comparable to child slavery?

Yeah, less than a fraction of a percent of these memes are made on home gpus. Most are using publicly available, datacenter based ai prompts.

These datacenters gobble up power and fresh water from people who need it to sustain their existence. This is similar to child labor in that it is exploiting a vulnerable populations resources for a profit.

So okay, instead of doing it at home at 80% something efficiency, I then do it on specifically designed data-center that uses even less power to achieve my task. Why is this worse?

We already know the water argument mostly fails.

Because now you are counted as a user gives prompt them (companies) more to make new data centers which are a totally disaster for the enviroment, whoever has to live near 'em and whoever was forced to move away from them— oh and they sometimes even ignore that nearby water sources are used for the city water and pollute it

The big spenders and consumers of AI aren’t people occasionally generating some meme. It’s not even close.

Then it shouldn’t matter that we’re telling the occasional memer to not use AI and that a human made meme is better.

It’s a hypothetical joke. It is axiomatic that it is funny, that’s established in the premise… there is no ‘why’.

If someone wants to try to argue that objectively funny joke isn’t funny because of the reader’s anxiety that they may accidentality be laughing at something made by AI then they’re welcome to try.

Keep in mind that the meme isn’t ‘It IS AI so it isnt’ funny’ the meme is ‘It is funny but I can’t laugh because AI exists’.
