I don’t quite remember what I set as this was more than half a year ago. But the images couldn’t be removed as easily, also not from the GUI view, as they were somehow not registered in a certain list that should have shown them. And since then I just use the terminal out of habit.

However I just found an article about Mint removing old kernels once a week automatically.
