They are heavily restricting it, and it’s reversible with some effort, know-how, and compromise, right? But killing it, I feel like they are not. Even though I strongly oppose what they are doing, don’t get me wrong!

These changes don’t affect AOSP. Basically if the phone comes with the Google play store it is affected. AOSP doesn’t have Google play in it.
I would agree, but I wouldn’t say they are killing the project. 👍
