The rich abuse the poor, pick a fight, conscript the poor and are then shocked when the abused farmers would just stand aside when the attack came. Smart nobility knew this is a two way even street.

They didn’t attack their officers. They often just refused to move or attack. Simple desertion happens a lot more. Mutiny is also common enough. But this is the cleanest standing aside.
