no, it isn’t. its out of stock.
I got 2 and bout 5 minutes after release. I had to click the button a few times at the selecting payment method type screen.
Before anyone gets mad, one is for me and the other is for my grandkids who enjoyed using my OG Steam Controller before it kicked the bucket.
They’ll probably be releasing in waves like they have with other hardware but I agree with everyone else, this rollout was shit and needed preorders for non scalpers.
Sold out in minutes. Wonder how many were scalpers
I got one after 5 minutes of trying until my payment finally went through.
There are dozens of us!
Me and one of my online buddies (but not the third online buddy) were able to grab one so that’s 2 you can move from the scalpers to user side. Searching steam controller with a few different words left me only with the original controller and some others, so I’m hoping a majority of the sold ones are to legit users

Me too, friend. Me too. 🥲
It’d be a tough claim to say I’m disappointed, as the technical fiasco today was completely predictable and expected. But, I did get my hopes up a little, only to have them dashed.
The reason I got my hopes up though is that this time the site loaded normally, pages rendered quickly, buttons worked, so it gave the illusion that Steam might be functional this time around. As you probably know, normally when a sale starts or new hardware goes on sale, the site just stops working, bugs out, slows to a crawl, etc.
Unfortunately, after getting the controller in my cart, the checkout failed at the payment processing step. I tried a few different payment methods. I tried on a few different devices. No luck.
After stepping away for a little bit, I took a peek and saw that the controllers hadn’t sold out yet. I figured I’d try it again. Still broke at the payment step, but this time there was a different error message than the one which showed up initially. I decided to remove the controller from my cart and see if it would work after re-adding it. Only when I went back to the controller landing page, it now said that these things are out of stock.
A little bit after that I saw a post here on Lemmy saying something along the lines of “if you have the controller in your cart but couldn’t check out earlier, try it now, it will work.” So that was kind of a final “fuck you” to me.
Someone mentioned in another thread putting the money in your Steam account before the product becomes available, because the payment processing is usually the problem.
That did not work for me either. Though full disclosure, I only tried to purchase a game with it during the outage, but it failed with the same messages I was getting with my other payment options.
This is what I did. Followed by 30 mins of clicking purchase. Finally went thru.
I had money in my account from a friend’s gift I was keeping aside for the controller, and after a few attempts where it errored out I was able to place my order
I did and even that failed. I was spam clicking the continue button for 15min until it randomly went through
Doesn’t sound like it failed.
Well I’ve got lucky, it failed only about 1000x before it let me trough
Nice try GabeN
If it’s any consolation, I have the controller in my cart since release, have enough money in my Steam wallet, and I still can’t buy it. Tried often enough.
To be honest when I found out that it needs Steam to work properly I lost most interest. I guess it’s just not my use case
Totally fair. There are lots of controllers that do similar things with wider use.
And it instantly sold out…
Hopefully they come back in stock soon.
What are people buying this for? Obviously there are a bunch of use cases but I’m curious to hear people’s individual needs. I doubt it’s replacing the keyboard & mouse setup.
i really like trackpads and custom bindings for older games on Deck and I wanna have the same on my TV, so I can sit next to my gf and not alone by my desk
A friend gifted me some Steam credit for my birthday last year and I figured I might as well buy the controller with it.
I don’t need it as a dyed in the wool keyboard and mouse gamer, but there are some games where that setup is a little clunky. Jedi Fallen Order and Survivor are an example, where I can’t find a reasonable binding for the force powers controls.
The second reason is that I use my PC as my “TV” too, so I think it’d be nice to be able to use the touchpads on the controller instead of reaching for the mouse when I’m on the couch.
I’m disabled. I basically can’t leave my bed. A normal mouse and keyboard are awkward to use. This controller would be perfect for me.
I know this from using my Steam Deck all the time. But it’s getting a bit heavy. With the Steam Controller I could have my display and controller independent of each other.
But I will miss the Steam Deck’s easy zoom feature (holding it closer to my face) that aided my failing eyes. But both Steam and KDE have software solutions for that that I can hopefully map to the controller pretty comfortably.
I don’t know how you would feel about them, but they have little “gaming pillows” where you attach the deck to it and it holds up the deck while resting on your belly so that your hands don’t have to do all the work.
It might be an option for you or others.
Fair enough. I hope it works well for you!
I hate the trackpads on the original Steam controller, but love them on the Steam Deck. I want to be able to have a dedicated controller with them for when I hook up my Steam Deck to my TV, or for a handful of games that are better designed for controllers.
I was fortunately able to buy mine a minute before you were supposed to be able to order them. 🤷
Beyond the fact that I generally like Valve hardware and could use another spare controller, I mainly want it to play Guild Wars 2 on my TV. As an MMO, it obviously has a lot of inputs that make using a traditional controller for it difficult. I already created a custom layout for the Steam Deck which works pretty well for me, but I’d really rather use my far more powerful desktop PC and TV when I’m at home, which the Steam Controller should allow me to do.
I use my gaming desktop on my TV. Especially for games where you’re only occasionally doing inventory management for instance, it can be nice to use touchpads for the 1:1 input every so often. Also a lot of RTS games that would otherwise be unplayable or at least difficult from the couch are suddenly accessible.
Add in Valve’s recent reputation for repairability and open communication and it’s a hard combination to beat.
I don’t get the interest in these. I hated the first one. It’s gathering dust somewhere.
I love colony sims, factory/automation games, city builders, CRPGs. OpenTTD, OpenRCT2, Rimworld, Prison Architect, Factorio, Shapez 2… anything that heavily replies upon a mouse on PC, and is finicky to control with thumb sticks, is remarkable with the Deck’s track pads. I’ve also got a handful of desktop apps, added as non-steam games so they can be accessed in gaming mode, that benefit from track pads. I like being able to open a browser and flip toggles in Home Assistant or access the web UI for other things I host.
I also like to dock my Deck and my Pro 2 controllers (great for fighters, platformers and classic console emulation) aren’t gonna cut it for those games. The steam controller looks like I’d get everything I love about the Deck’s controls - while docked. That’s a big deal to me. Maybe I’ll get lucky and actually be able to snag one this year.
If you don’t play anything in those genres or never drop to desktop mode, you’re probably not missing anything. But I intentionally bought a portable computer and frequently use it like one.
This one is very different. He first was an experiment that some liked and some hated. But they learned from that to create the steamdecks input. Which many people love. This is basically like the steamdeck’s input. It’s not really useful to compare it to the original controller.
Extra buttons and solid gyro
