Prostrate, not prostate but still sounds like it was a good time.

41 As soon as the boy had gone, David rose from beside the stone heap and prostrated himself with his face to the ground. He bowed three times, and they kissed each other and wept with each other; David wept the more.

Unfortunately this is probably all propaganda. As I understand it, many scholars believe that many of these stories are Davidic propaganda, and that David most likely killed Saul and Jonathan (and Saul’s whole family) in a sort of coup.

But assuming that is true, it’s quite likely that Solomon coup’d David and the whole Bathsheba story was meant to legitimize Solomon as a successor.

Take this with a grain of salt because I’m just a fascinated layman, and my recapitulation is likely limited by my level of understanding.

I just like confronting old testament bible-thumping chuds with this scripture. I don’t care nearly as much about the provenance of the stories as I do about upsetting the fragile toxic masculinity of religious men.

I always took the Bible as a lot of bullshit. I never really gave any thoughts to scholars picking it apart. That’s pretty cool to think about.

Here’s a fun fact: Some scholars believe Genesis 1 is a later addition than the rest of the story, because Judaism was originally polytheistic.

Correct, and fundamentally you don’t make laws to prohibit something nobody is doing.

A few different gods had to get rationalized or syncretized in one way or another as I understand it.

Not only Baal but that pesky Asherah and her complicated and inconvenient situationship with YHWH.
