      In what meaning of the word? They seem to not favour small government and deregulated economy.

        I wouldn’t view small government as conservative tbh, but I’m not from the US.

        Ultimately it’s a relative term, relative to the status quo. Wikipedia defines it as

        preserve traditional institutions, customs, and values

        Seems the word tankies is used for authoritarian socialists/communists. I personally would view authoritarianism as a rather conservative thing.
